  • What are the legal constraints in making decisions about learning resources? 

I also wanted to write the information in student-friendly terms for an intermediate class (Grades 4-7).

  1. A lack of variety in the resources they use (mostly websites and books)
  2. The tendency to only use Google to find websites, which leaves them feeling overwhelmed
  3. An urge to use YouTube to find videos about their topic, which can lead to finding unrelated or even inappropriate content

Last year, I introduced my students to our school library’s web resources, and many said they preferred to use this over Google because the search results were less overwhelming. I included the web resources they found most useful on my infographic as well as some from the Burnaby Public Library. I also found some easy-to-use educational video websites to give students that prefer to get information from videos some alternatives to YouTube.

I felt it was important to draw my students’ attention to using people as sources while incorporating FNESC’s First Peoples Principles of Learning. I included some information about the importance of authenticating Indigenous resources. It is important to note that the information on this infographic, particularly in this section, would require class discussion or mini-lessons to address the content and that this is just a brief summary to remind students of what was learned.

Finally, I incorporated considerations about copyright and privacy as well as the SIFT method for scrutinizing resources in a section about digital citizenship. I felt this gave my infographic a well-rounded approach to curating resources for students.
