Identifying Effective Climate Change Education Strategies: A Systematic Review of the Research.

This article investigates the different teaching strategies that teachers use when teaching students about climate change. The article acknowledges that climate change can be a difficult subject to teach as it is seen as a very opinionated topic. It is so different from most other topics in the science curriculum like the periodic table or the circulatory system, that are concrete. The article suggests methods like debate, discussion and many more as beneficial teaching strategies. It emphasizes also the importance of making the material relevant to the lives of the students in order for them to engage with the topic and the material effectively. Making links to the nature of science also. These are aspects that I tried to include in my teaching, I placed a real emphasis on discussion in many of my classes.

A Flipped Classroom in Action.

This article focuses on one teachers experience of using a flipped classroom approach. A flipped classroom is something that I would really like to embrace in my next school placement/ when I am a qualified teacher as I believe it really enhances the learning that can take place in a classroom, leaving more time for practicals, discussions and direct help with the students. I was unable to try this strategy out when on placement as many of my students did not have access to devices/internet. I did however put an emphases on having a video in most of my classes. Like the students mentioned in this article my students reported that they found it beneficial to hear another person explaining something, the visual aid of seeing it, and the ability to watch the video again if there was any confusion. This coupled with the added engagement and motivation that videos have on students I believe makes them a really effective tool to use in teaching.

This article discusses the relationship between inquiry based learning and critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills are a really important skill to for your students to develop and for you to foster in your classroom. The research also indicates that "scientific inquiry" should also be coupled with "scientific discussion" as IBL can increase the comprehension level of students. The article also refers to Çetinbaş-Gazeteci research that showed that games had a positive effect on students critical thinking skills and performance. I found the use of games i.e matching games etc. really beneficial and effective in my classes, as motivational, assessment, information and evaluative tools. I tried to incorporate inquiry into my planning where possible and the use of games.

Trust and Mistrust when Students Read Multiple Information Sources about Climate Change

Now more then ever it is vitally important that students are equipped with the correct skills to be able to identify credible sources of information, not only in science but in their other subjects and especially in their everyday lives. As discussed in one of our tutorials it crucial that sources relating to such controversial topics like climate change can be credible and that students are able to identify bias that may be present. When in the classroom one student remarked that "if something is reported on Facebook that means it's true". I tried to include questioning in my planning trying to get to students to ask, why? This type of critical analysis of information is skill that should be encouraged in the students especially when dealing with topics like climate change.
