1.What is Law?

Law is what gives those who break it penalties for breaking the law.It makes the places we live safer for us to live. law also makes sure those who are a threat to our society be locked up to protect us. The law is set so people don't abuse their powers.

2.Goals of our legal system

To protect- Our legal system protects us against those who wish to hurt us.

Justice- to put those who break the law in prison

Help- to help those in need and help those who are in danger.

safety- protecting us, our homes, our stuff, and our lifes.

3.Criminal Vs. Civil

Criminal cases have a defendant and a prosecutor. the defendant can be put in prison for a long time. the defendant might be able to go free. the prosecutor is trying to put the defendant behind bars.Both are trying to earn something. Both require a judge. Civil cases involve suing people for money. Resolves disputes between 2 party's. Settle divorces and custody over children.

B.a settlement would save each person time and money.

C.a Arbitration would decide who has to repair the problem.

D.a ombudsmen would investigate the complaint until an agreement is reached.

E. a Settlement would let each person agree on their terms.

F. Going to court, using the court to prove you don't owe anything.

G.a Negotiation would settle this, so all three of them could ride together.

1.opening statement-the Plaintiff or Prosecutor explains the evidence or proof of the allegations.

2.defense opening statement- defenses attorney tries to disprove the evidence made by the prosecutor.

3.direct examination-the witnesses for the prosecutor are questioned by the prosecutor.

4.cross-examination- the defenses attorney questions the witnesses.

5.Motions- if the prosecutors case has not been established the judge can end the case.

6.direct examination by defense- defense witnesses are questioned.

7.cross examination by prosecutor-prosecutor questions defense witnesses.

8.closing statement by prosecutor-prosecutor reviews all evidence and asks for the guilty verdict.

9.closing statement by defense attorney- reviews all evidence and asks for not guilty verdict.

10.rebuttal argument- prosecutor can make additional closing statements.

11.jury-judge instructs the jury as to the law that applies in the case.

12.verdict-jury or judge can make the decision of guilty or not guilty.

Voir dire-assigned to specific cases.

removal for cause-removal of some one who can make a fair verdict.

peremptory challenges- removing a limited amount of jurors for no specific reason.

A.No one in my family has been in a jury.

B.Some people in civil case jury s may different views on the people in the case.in a criminal case people might have received word of what the person did.

C.not everyone should have to be in a jury, like old criminals should't because they may take pity on the convicted.

D.do you believe that people can be convicted even if they didn't do it? what are your views on...?

E. if a jury member starts to be disruptive.

12.Cases getting to the supreme court

Cases must first go to state supreme courts or the court of appeals. then the supreme court listens to appeals from the court of appeals and decides if they want to accept the case or decline it.
