Fierce street by street fighting followed for two months. In a few days, the Soviets had encircled the German troops. Hitler insisted that his soldiers fight to the death, which most of them did. In January 1943 Hitlers army surrendered. The Battle of Staingrad cost Germany more then 200,000 troops, while more than a million Soviet soldiers died.
