Living in the Moment

There are many times in the novel where the idea of living in the moment/present is brought up. For example, one character updates pictures to Instagram with no context just to share his present; another jumps off of waterfalls, sings karaoke and does other "risky" things to feel alive and be in the moment. Why do you think that we, as humans, have such difficulty living in the moment in the 21st century?

Isolation

Since this book is about an agency that notifies people about when they are supposed to die, we hear a lot about people's isolation after the notification. Many of these people feel alone and have regrets about not spending time with the ones they love. For example, a famous actor regrets not spending more time with his parents in their home country instead of just paying their bills. Isolation is arguably one of the biggest issues our society faces today, with many people feeling disconnected and alone, especially after the acute part of the pandemic. Do you agree that isolation is a problem in our society? If so, what are some ways we can alleviate it?

They Both Die at the End represents the negative and positive aspects of society on social media. There is a "Last Friend" app for people forecasted to die that day and meet new people. You can meet genuine connections on here or shady people. This is similar to real life where social media can be positive and help us form solid connections, OR it can be a platform to display the worst of humanity. In your opinion, on the whole, does social media have a more negative or positive influence? Why?
