Getting Started and Targeting a journal

Potential target journals:
Pre-session 1: Had considered "Anatomical Sciences Education (Anat Sci Educ)" -simply from reading articles in the recent past.
Following Scopus analysis [using search terms ("Neuroanatomy") & ("Teaching")], Anat Sci Educ was top of list (interestingly) - further, potentially interesting, more specific target journal identified: Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education (June) (much lower IF, but "publishes peer-reviewed reports of innovations in undergraduate neuroscience education. JUNE serves as a mechanism for faculty to exchange information regarding topics such as laboratory exercises, new media, curricular considerations, and teaching methods." - potential good fit for an article about innovation in neuroanatomy teaching.

Rationale for Target Journal
Have decided to target Anatomical Sciences Education (Anat Sci Edu) for the following reasons:
-Lead journal in the discipline of anatomy education (and also a relatively high impact factor (3.2) if one pays any attention to such metrics)
-Had highest number of articles relating to "neuroanatomy" AND "teaching" of the journals in the field
-Has a number of related articles describing 'neurophobia' and improving teaching and learning strategies for neuroanatomy - I hope to contribute to this conversation, and perhaps create a go-to article summarising current e-learning strategies and their effectiveness.

Two sample papers from Journal
Anat Sci Educ. 2016 Nov;9(6):583-602.

From chalkboard, slides, and paper to e-learning: How computing technologies have transformed anatomical sciences education.

Trelease RB1.

-Extensive historical perspective on the emergence and application of imaging, computer-based learning and the web in anatomy education.

Anat Sci Educ. 2018 Jan;11(1):81-93.

Understanding neurophobia: Reasons behind impaired understanding and learning of neuroanatomy in cross-disciplinary healthcare students.

Javaid MA1, Chakraborty S2, Cryan JF1, Schellekens H1, Toulouse A1.

-Descriptive article from UCC providing evidence for students' perceptions regarding specific difficulties associated with neuroanatomy learning, and promoting the development of CAL resources to enhance learning.

Shape of Literature Review
1. Introduction: The Problem - Neurophobia & Review of the Difficult Topics/Issues in Neuroanatomy Learning
2. Limitations of Traditional Neuroanatomical Teaching Methods
3. Review of (primarily) E-Learning Technologies/Strategies to Enhance Neuroanatomy Understanding/Clinical Application/Retention (Evidence-based studies)
4. Appraisal/Evaluation of AXON -Animated eXploration of Neuroanatomy (developed at UCD Medicine) (no current 'research' performed/but extensive feedback on resource over last 5-6 years. Exemption from ethical approval being sought for a survey targeting last semester's UG Medicine cohort/and also to use retrospective feedback quotations)
5. Conclusions/Recommendations/Future Directions in Enhancing Neuroanatomy Teaching & Understanding

My Guidelines
Having examined Anat Soc Educ author guidelines:

1. Reviews submitted to this journal can be short perspective-type reviews or longer comprehensive systematic reviews generally ranging from 3 to 15 journal pages (950 words per page (3,000-14,000 words)). Will probably be aiming at a more comprehensive review, but somewhere in the middle of above;
2. Need to consider collaborating team (current neuroanatomy educators at UCD Medicine, and individuals who were involved in creation of 'AXON');
3. Exemption from ethical approval currently being sought;
4. Need to design survey (with 1 or more UCD Medicine neuroanatomy educators); survey data will be useful, but not essential for this submission - so will not be completely reliant on receiving/analysing the data by a certain date.

Work in progress paper
(Apologies for the delay here guys - fighting off the flu during last 2 weeks...) - attached draft below is really just a skeleton: plan to devote significant additional time to this during teaching break...

Questions for my learning set?
Structure?
Any sections I could include/exclude?

Action Plan following work in Progress Peer Review
- Positive feedback on the AXON resource itself was very welcome; peers queried why it had not been published before (--> no concrete evidence acquired /or survey performed on its actual effectiveness to date);
- A simple case study could potentially be written up, but again without evidence, would be difficult to get published;
- Plan to continue writing paper as a review article, and embedding the AXON resource within this review - can still complete a study on the effectiveness of AXON as an e-learning resource at a later date for subsequent publication.
- Thanks Katherine & Nick for the discussion!

Full Draft Paper
Questions for my learning set????
Action Plan following Full Draft Paper Peer Review

Action Plan following Peer Review
from a colleague
