On Friday, when Rashad got to the convenient store, he grabbed a bag of chips and headed to the back where the drinks were. He noticed an older white lady in the back also looking for a drink, and a police officer on duty. When he was picking up a drink, the lady accidentally bumped into him, and the drink and chips went flying. The officer heard the noise and ran back there. He immediately grabbed Rashad and started yelling in his face asking if he was stealing and trying to assault the lady. He got pushed out of the store and shoved onto the ground. Friday comes and goes, and Quinn is debating whether or not to go to the march. He decides that since he's already on the Galluzzo's bad side, and that his crush was going, he went to the march, not caring what they thought. When they were walking, he slowly made his way to the front when everyone started to get on the ground. The beginning of this chapter starts off with Rashad thinking of the word custody. Adding on to that, he also thinks about the police incident which was related to custody. While Rashad was still in the hospital, his parents listened to him. Rashad told the whole story in detail, however, his father was skeptical. Quinn is confused and disturbed about Rashad being beaten up by Paul. Quinn struggles living up to his father's standards--later, Ma is rather angry about Quinn and the theft of her alcohol. "You know, this stuff can kill you." Ma said, throwing the flask away. Quinn then blames Guzzo, which makes Ma more angry. Quinn recognizes Paul and Guzzo's supportive-ness in the beginning of the chapter. Later on, Jill tells Quinn that she witnessed Rashad being beaten up by Paul--which made Quinn feel guilty. Quinn doesn't want to mention the incident with Paul, so Quinn's way of talking was passive-aggressive. In the end of the chapter, the reader comes to terms with discipline and loyalty conflicted with standing up for justice.

Rashad's parents invited Pastor Johnson to see Rashad. Rashad, however, he felt violated. He feels as if religion wasn't the best comfort at the moment. Spoony appears later on and responds sarcastically to the pastor. The TV was turned on--it showed the incident at Jerry's--Rashad's arrest. Quinn seemed to have felt conflicted and paranoid when it came to terms with Rashad's arrest. Jill suggests Quinn to watch the video of the incident, however, Quinn refuses to, which makes Jill feel as if that was the wrong thing to do for him. Throughout the chapter, Quinn starts to understand the incident more--especially about police violence, prejudice, as well as Paul--not really Paul, actually. Later on, he starts his journey to fight for racism.

Quinn arrives at school to find the words "RASHAD IS ABSENT AGAIN TODAY" spray painted on the sidewalk in front of the stairs. Many students were gathered around it--taking pictures and such. Quinn also remembers Paul telling him about how the city used to be 84% white. Springfield was 37% white. During lunch, Jill reveals that Quinn told her that he witnessed Rashad's arrest. The relationship between Rashad and the military is not as subtle anymore. Rashad is able to find more/better support later on in this chapter. Adding on, we also learn that everyone has weaknesses and we do fail at times. Mrs. Fitzgerald forgives Rashad for lying and shows understanding towards him as well. Their bond also strengthens throughout their conversation in this chapter.

Rashad gets to go home after a long time in the hospital. But before he did leave, he left the drawing he was working on at the hospital for the nurse who really liked it. When he does get home, he takes a shower and changes into some clean clothes. He decides to draw to pass the time until the march. When they do get there, he's suprised to see so many people there. They get started with the march, and when they lay down, he makes eye contact with on of the other kids.
