Mara's Relationship with Water

As a black woman, I have had a complicated relationship with water. My long, thick, black hair, would not get along with anyone if it got wet. It became a creature of the deep. Especially when I would go to the pool without it being braided. It was so challenging to put it under a swimming cap that three people often had to wrestle it into place. Sometimes the beast would break out of its cage, and when that happened all hell broke loose. It was free and there was nothing I could do but let it be. That is one of the reasons I was not allowed to go swimming until the summer when I had braids. Getting braids was by far one of my favorite things because that was the only time I did not have to worry about getting my hair wet. Right before I got to college, I decided to shave most of my hair off because I was sick of the monster. When I heard the buzz of the hair clippers, I felt relaxed. I was finally free. No more worries about getting my hair wet, I was finally able to be carefree. A couple days later, it was raining and I could walk through the rain and run my hands through my damp small fro, and there was not an ounce of panic, just freedom.
