Due to a medical appointment last week I wasnt able to attend the first session. Because of this i sent Kheing a self tape auditioning for the roles of Sally and Wendy.

Coming into class this week, due to the absense of a few of the actors last week, Kheing held another audition where he got each performer up to direct them through different scenes of the script to see compatibility and how each actor perceived the roles.

In this scene, Sally has just been exposed and embarrassed so she comes home defeated to be greeted by her flatmate Wendy asking about said interview. After reading the script I recognised that Sally and Wendy are close so I decided to be playful and warm with Wendy. I played against Niamh, Paige, and Luke. I bounced off Niamh and Luke's energy the most. I use a Meisner approach rather than focusing on myself I focus on the other actor which allows my reactions to be authentic and allows my presence and connection with the other actor to come across as more authentic.

This is the first time I have worked with Ben so a slapstick, heightened scene was quite intimidating for me, especially when I was shouting explicit words in his first - great first impression! However, we both understood that we were professionals and made each other feel more comfortable. I have previously done a course in stage combat so was very confident in my ability to perform a fake punch however Ben has never done something like this so I talked him through how it works and how he makes it look real by flinging his head back fast. I measured the distance my fist had to travel and we rehearsed it a few times so he was comfortable with it. After going through it with Kheing we weren't happy with how it would look on camera so we said after the casting was released he would figure out a different approach to the scene

I only auditioned for Sally in this scene. After going through the scene once Kheing directed me to heighten my reaction to Jeff's Cantonese. To do this I made sure to plan out each reaction changing to having my mouth open in disbelief with widened eyes to more deadpan eyes of defeat then I staggered my breath and on Jeffs's last line which he bellows across the long table I slightly jumped and widened my eyes again then sunk in my body shrinking my posture to show the defeat I let out a big sigh, looked at the other interviewers and the scene ended. We worked with it at different paces to get the best comedic response.

Roles have now been cast so the real rehearsals have begun. We began with a chat about all the progress we have been making with our individual roles then we went into a rehearsal. For this lesson I had gone through my script and started to add character to my role exploring her personality.

With the casting decided we set the long table up and Kheing sat the three interviewers on the opposite side of the table which helped to create the tension and divide between the characters. this helped me build up the awkwardness and intimidation of the 3 against 1. I explored the emotional memory of past interviews and focused the my nerves in my core. A 20 second silence was added for the opening of the scene to set the cold, uncomfortable feeling. During this silence I made sure to be slightly figitting, tapping my foot and looking around whilst waiting for the interviewers to address me. I added in some looks and tight smiles at the interviewer 1 and 2 to show how she is trying to appear friendly and warm. I view my character as a deer in the headlights in this scene so really played into the bewilderment and shock of being called out

With the casting of Wayne, Luke and I started to run our lines together and discuss our friendship in the film. We agreed that they were close friends from university and they were both in desperate need of a new job and we explored what had happened the night they edited sally's CV before we started to act to further connect with our characters and relationship. We worked on bouncing off each other and the lines feeling like a true conversation with friends with us adding smiles and eye contact at lines like 'Well it did get you the interview' as Wayne is trying to lighten the mood and Sally knows that and appreciates her friend's help.

Character life description

Sally grew up in a very family oriented home and glided her way through her school life. She is a friendly and outgoing character who is a little too hard on herself. She met her best friend Wayne in halls at University and became inseparable. They moved in together after leaving University and they both had been working in a bar but now want to progress and get a good job.

Today we rehearsed the camera angles and movements whilst rehearsing the two interview scenes. We were figuring out our frames and what room we had as actors to work with. We played around with the different props and how we could build the tension in the scene more. For me, I worked on creating the room in my head and imagining what I saw in front of me I also further developed the questions that were going through my head in the scene to further brighten my character up and bring her to life.

I arrived on set at 8am prepared with my lines. After hair and make up had been done the cast had a few rehearsals. When the cameras were set up we got into places and started with the 20 second long shot. I have to be aware that I am on camera and the framing is different each shot so I made sure to communicate with Alex (DOP/CAMERA) to make sure I knew where my shot would cut me off as I had a close up, midshot and longshot. I needed to make sure to alter my facial expressions and hand gestures to fit into frame and know where to cheat the camera when needed (bringing gestures higher up...).

The last scene we had done although comedic it was naturalism however this scene is Jeffs imagination so everything had to be heightened. I introduced larger facial expressions, inflated actions. I had to recreate the image of my character from Jeffs's perspective so I made her more bratty and sour in the face. My face was more menacing with my eyes squinted and a slight frown. There were a lot of zoom shots and difficult shots which meant we ended up taking a lot of takes which I took the opportunity to change my intensity each time giving the editors different options to work with. This scene was silly and fun which made it easier to achieve the comedic tone.

Due to the location being booked we only had our set time frame to get all the shots which meant we had to stick to a tight schedule. To prepare for this I made sure to go through my lines with my acting partner before the day.. This was the first day with this set so we had to get reblocked by Kheing so we could hit our marks for the camera. A big problem this shoot was street traffic, we had to stop mid take a few times and that slowed us down. As a team though we made sure to be as proactive as possible, for me this was being ready and waiting for the next scene to be shot, running lines whilst I was a waiting with my partner and making sure I was in the correct costume for the next scene. I really felt absorbed in my work being in the set as I felt like I could add to my characters personality more as there were different pieces of decorations in the flat that I linked to my character such as the owners book and music collection and their glassware I was able to see that my character loved order in her home but she was messy in her own life.

I was unable to attend the tuesday shoot due to illness which meant that the Wednesday was going to be very full as we only had the permit for peel park until 6 pm. I arrived to set an hour late as I still wasn't 100%. After everything was set up I rehearsed with the 2 preachers and tried different levels of skeptisism each time for a variety of takes for the editor. A problem in the park was there was a lot of interfearance with the public. There were lots of people in the park which slowed us down but we managed to catch up on lost time as we managed to get some shots in less takes than we thought. My physicallity was a huge focus as thre was the stalking scene which was a slapstick, mime montage of Sally hunting Jeff. Kheing wanted it to be silly and fun so I made sure my posture was hunched, i tried leading with my toes and fingers to creep along. There was also the Sally imagination scene where she screams in Jeffs face. This scene was always very intimidating to me, especially to perform in public but with the support of the crew we manged to get each shot done in less than 3 takes each.

Adam and I met up and recorded 3 takes of my voice over. I had already recorded the reaction so to prepare I watched through my reaction and then recorded my voice over. Each take I did in a different tone. Take 1 I was dissapointed in myself, take 2 I was in shock and laughing and take 3 was a mixture of the both.
