I would really love to focus on Spanish Baroque for my long-term project, but i'm a bit confused on what exactly constitutes a "monument"? could i make a series of journal entries/visual comics about my feelings about them?

Paloma, you could absolutely do a visual comic book! That could be fascinating.

But rather than just thinking about Baroque art, maybe you could think about martyrs or portraits. For instance, you could do portraits of your family/community, connecting them to works by the Baroque greats--certainly including Velazquez. Maybe Rembrandt, Hals, van Dyck...

You could also do a series--how long is a series? I duuno. At least 3 or 4?--of modern martyrs, people (famous, infamous, whatever) you think were lost to modern assaults. That could be members of the military, children lost to gun violence, unnamed masses who were the victims of drought and famine, refugees.

I can see this going in a lot of fascinating directions.

EC

I was thinking hard upon what I loved so much about Baroque art, beyond the drama and grandeur. I think, what draws me so much to the work of Caravaggio, Bernini, and Velasquez, is that there is a concept there of removing an important piece of the puzzle, yet through the hole there is deeper understanding. In particular I am thinking of Caravaggio's "The calling of St. Matthew" and "Las Meninas". "The calling of st. Matthew" removes one of the most integral parts of the story and the larger culture it embodies: Jesus himself. It has taken out his figure, but in doing so, we as the viewer see ourselves, in the form of the people at the table, looking at the enormity of this decision, and the importance of the moment. Las Meninas also does this through removing the king and queen from a painting of the king and queen, redefining itself from a portrait, and from a lifestyle painting, and creating itself into a newer, deeper reflection of both a moment and a legacy.

As an illustrator who focuses on publishing and storytelling, I felt for a very long time confused on how to involve very old and, in many aspects, outdated pieces of art into my own work. Although I admire it, I do not visually integrate any of the old styles of realism and oil painting into my work. Instead I am going to use these works of art, rather than draw influence for them. They will become vessels for a deeper narrative that I want to convey. I may not be able to create a fully fleshed out narrative, such as a finished comic or short story, before the end of the year, but I am rather going to focus on thinking through this concepts, and creating from that inspiration. I will have some sketchbook pages in class today to show you if you want to see those as well.

I didn't get a chance to see your sketchbook. Can you snap a few photos and post them here?

I think the issue here is to connect these great works and your gorgeous ideas about them to specific experiences or individuals in your own life. That's the "monument/memorial" part. And working in your own illustrational style, sticking to your own approach is definitely the way to go.

What is influential on your art, what inspires you, is not the style, per se, but the story. You are a story teller. Baroque artists were magnificent story tellers. I think that is the connection--once your choose some of your own stories.

If you want to talk about this send an email--gets my attention fastest.

EC 15 NOv
