What does the free verse poem reveal about Maria’s personality?The free verse poem  
reveals that Maria is conflicted because she is not sure of her feelings or
 identity.According to the text,the author writes “I am a different Maria no longer Maria Alegre who was born on a tropical island and lived with two parents in a house near the sea nor like Maria trieste the lonely barrio girl of new american life”.This shows that Maria is not sure of her identity or feelings of moving to America but she has to adapt to her new life.In addition the author writes “sometimes I feel like a bird soaring above all that  is ugly or sad I am Maria alegre other times when I am like a small underground creature when I feel like I will never see the sun again I am Maria trieste”. This shows that Maria has mixed feelings and is not sure of her identity because she says sometimes I feel like a bird soaring above all that is ugly or sad so this means she feels happy but then she says other times she feels like a small underground creature so this means she feels sad.therefore the poem reveals that Maria is conflicted because she is not sure of her identity and her feelings.
