The "Second Industrial Revolution" was distinct from the "First Industrial Revolution." Rather than focusing on textile production and steam power, the Second Industrial Revolution relied on internal combustion engines (gasoline or diesel). One of the first lines of communication was the American telegraph. This telegraph was made and built in the 1840, by the 1850s a cable was connected to the telegraph finally causing communication across the pacific ocean. During the industrial age, coal was the main energy source, until the late 19th century, when petroleum was increasingly used, though this did cause immense air population. Steel was popular too because of the Bessemer Converter, which made it stronger, lighter, and more flexible, leading mass steel production in western Europe, the US, Japan, and Russia.

During the Industrial Revolution, the lower class bared the worst and benefited the least from changes like the mass migration to cities from farmlands (poor housing, disease, high crime). The factories exploited the workers to the point where there was resistance, the spreading of socialist beliefs and ideas which led to improvements (voting rights). Reactions varied across the world in response to the Industrial Revolution like in China which made no effort to modernize or conform to the changing world. Or the Middle East's reaction where the Ottoman Empire actually made changes to legislature, and gifting of liberties to the people. However, it was not to last as the Sultan of the Empire repealed the acts as a way to stomp out any opposition to his absolute power. While Africa stayed the victim of the colonizer's extreme exploitation.
