Toxic Milk Syndrome:

What is it and what are the symptoms?
This is caused by a variety of nutritional issues such as uterine infections and the number one cause of it is mammary infections. The symptoms of toxic milk syndrome are listless pups that tend to whine constantly. They also have an increased salivation rate and develop a bad case of diarrhea and become very bloated.
Treatment and Prevention?
Unfortunately, there is no treatment for toxic milk syndrome however, there is ways to prevent it from happening. You could reduce the suckling time in case of over consumption (separate mother and puppies every three hours). Another way of preventing it could be to blunt the puppies claws in case of mammary gland trauma.

what is weaning? Weaning is when it is time to bring animals off their mothers milk and onto their normal species diet.

When does weaning begin?
Weaning for puppies can generally begin between three and four weeks of age and should be ideally completed by 7-8 weeks of age.
Weaning for kittens usually begin when they reach around 4 weeks and is normally completed at 8-10 weeks old.

Problems
Weaning is not a problem itself, but there can be problems during weaning;
Putting puppies and kittens onto regular food can cause them to inhale it and choke. the food needs to be small enough for the size of the animal. puppies can tend to eat too much during this growth period which could lead them to bone or joint problems.

Symptoms
Symptoms of inhaling and chocking on food are; gagging, reverse sneezing or vomiting.

Symptoms of bone or joint problems; Abnormal stance or gait, inability to rise, lameness, lethargy, loss of appetite, misshapen limbs, reluctance to move.
All of these problems are caused by weaning (inhaling and chocking on food that is too big or limb and bone problems due to eating too much food during the growth period)
How can this be prevented;
With both inhaling and bone problems, when weaning the owner who is helping to wean should be watching the food intake that the puppy and kittens are eating.

Food should be bought from pet stores and should be small enough for the puppy or kitten to eat without chocking
There should be a limit on how much food your animal can eat daily and during each feed. this will prevent over feeding and later on can prevent growth problems and bone problems.
