Source from: en.wikipedia.org

Type of Source: Pictorial

Time Period: 14th Century

Area of Research: Government

Inference: I can infer that Singapore had many connections with other countries in the world.

Evidence: Early Singapore was called "Temasek", possibly a word deriving from "tasik" (Malay for lake or sea) and taken to mean Sea-town in Malay. The Nagarakretagama, a Javanese epic poem written in 1365, listed a settlement on the island called Tumasik as a vassal of the Majapahit. The name is also mentioned in the Malay Annals thought to have been written in 1535. Temasek may have diplomatic relationship with Vietnam, which recorded it as Sach Ma Tich, as as early as the 13th century. It is also recorded by the Chinese traveller Wang Dayuan who visited the island around 1330 and described a place called Dan Ma Xi (單馬錫, a transcription of the Malay Temasek). The name Dan Ma Xi or Temasek is written in Chinese as 淡馬錫 in the Mao Kun map.

From examining the sources such as the Nagarakertagama which is a Javanese Court Poem and the Sejarah Melayu or Malay Annals, it tells us that Singapore was conquered and protected by many due to Singapore's weakness as a country. "He found Temasek a successful port although a vassal of the King of Siam" This told us that the Majapahit Kingdom became the protector of a weaker country which was Singapore, establishing a political connection with the Majapahit Kingdom. "The island of Tumasik was under the protection of the Majapahit Kingdom in the 14th century." This tells us that Singapore was once conquered by Siam, establishing a political connection with Siam.

From examining the sources such as the broken stem cups and the Sri Lankan coins found at Fort Canning, we can infer that Singapore had many cultural exchanges taking place and probably exchanged ideas about traditions, clothing and with countries such as Sri Lanka and China. Broken stem cups originated from China and Sri Lankan coins originated from Sri Lanka. China may have influenced Singapore through the exchange of ideas about pottery and ceramics, allowing cultural exchanges to take place. Sri Lanka may have influenced Singapore about the coins and their type of currency, allowing cultural exchanges to occur.
