Authority Does Not Equal Power

As a teacher it is important to recognize that authority and power are not the same. Students can sense our intentions and when they are good, we are more likely to acquire authority.

Fairness

As teachers, we are to treat students fairly. We may have the ability to treat students differently and it may be human nature to be inclined to treat students better, but I think we lose authority when we do.

We Are Not Friends

It is very fun when we find we have things in common with our students, but we need to remain in our role and not try to be "pals" with students. It is more important to have classroom management than be liked. I believe students still enjoy learning from teachers who are intentional about keeping the boundaries clear between students and teacher as far as "being friends" goes.

Be Confident!

Teachers are there to teach students and it is okay to assume you know more than them. Do so in an interesting way that will draw students in and make them want to learn. I struggle with confidence and I often assume I am not the smartest person in any room but as a teacher, confidence is necessary to acquire authority.
