The “Red Zone”

There has been an increase in shootings occurring in Bonteheuwel, since December 2018, that have resulted in 15 people being killed. Areas like Bonteheuwel, that have been inflicted with gang violence are now know as “Red Zones”.

There has been too little police presence to help bring an end to this sort of violence in our communities and it is now said that an anti-gang unit will be instated in Bonteheuwel to bring an end to it, but how long will it last?

Every year the same thing happens over and over again, and after the anti-gang unit leaves or rather fulfills their duties, the gang violence returns.

Last year the community united and took the streets of Bonteheuwel, Valhalla Park and Bishop Lavis, to ask for extra police to help fight this gang violence and even after that, there is still a lack of police presence in these “Red Zones”. This is why the gang violence has returned once again in greater numbers and with more force.

I believe that there needs to be more police presence within these “Red Zone”. I also believe that more resources need to be allocated towards this fight. If these resources are not allocated to areas like this, how are these communities suppose stand up ag this type of violence? Are the people living in these communities suppose to live in constant fear for the rest of their lives? Should children really be raised in environments like this?

Communities like Bonteheuwel need to be supported in this fight so that there can be a brighter future for the people and more importantly for the children living in these communities.

I absolutely agree with the needs mentioned above. There should definitely be an increase in patrolling police vehicles as it would make the community feel more at ease. More resources should also be flushed into these communities that would get the youths involved, in order to keep them from these violent acts.

Although all of this is said, I do believe that gangsterism is a deep rooted scare from Apartheid and even perhaps pre Apartheid and therefore it's eradication will never be guaranteed. It has sadly become part of our culture and threateningly even a "norm". So will we ever be able to successfully fight this battle? A question I often find myself asking.
