My Social Location Within Webs of Oppression

Social Location refers to the social position (class, gender, race ,sexual orientation, ablity, religion and language etc).one occupies thus the level of privilege to which one have access(Bill Lee Et al,2014,pg39) While oppression is having less power as a result of belonging to a particular group(s)"There is no hierarchy of oppression"(Audery Lorde). I am oppressed because I am black, am a woman I am middle age (42years old)and I am immigrant. According to Viola Nzira and Paul." When our identity is defined negatively by those in power oppressive experience are highly likely to result. The process involved has been social devaluation it involves the casting of a person into negative roles such as menace etc(Anti oppressive practice in health and social care 2008) for example As an immigrant in Canada when I first came to the country I was denied and restricted access to most opportunities such as good employment and also experience racism and discrimination before becoming a citizen. Before moving to Canada to help a family member I knew nothing about discrimination and racism I was working as a cashier where everyone respect each others and didn't know anything about low class and middle class once your parents could work and provide your basic needs everyone was happy. I have experience so much since I left my home country and came to Canada and leaving with my son as a single mother Canada is where I learned about stress and how not to trust people because of all forms of bias and discrimination.

privilege refers to an advantage not available to others on equal terms. I am privilege because I am a woman, I am Canadian citizen, I am heterosexual, I am English speaking I am attending post secondary school I have a decent income when I work for a year as a supply custodian. Speaking English as my first language has been easy to interact with people compare to those who speaks English as a second language. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Ted Talk, ''The Danger of a Single Story ''illuminates how telling one interpretation of a group of people over and over again contributes to misunderstanding and generalization of a group of people. I often watch movies about discrimination and prejudice against black people and always used to think that all white people where racist and bias against black people. I remember being the only black person sitting at the theater watch Harriet Tubman movie among lots of Jewish people. Being in Canada all these years has taught me that all white people are not racist against black people and there are more in a person personality than just a complexion.
