The steps of Commitment to Healing are:
1. Mobilizing hope for the nurse as well as for the patient
2. Finding an acceptable interpretation of the illness
3. Assisting the patient to use social, emotional or spiritual support
Example: Patient came in with detox. The nurse gave the patient hope that he would get through it and would manage the detox. The nurse gave detailed expectations for the patient to expect, which ended up helping him not hit the call bell because he knew what to expect but was supportive and offered any support he needed to get through it.

According to Benner "presence" means the ability to have self-confidence, and self-esteem with their patients. While educating a patient on a new diagnosis the nurse must develop presence within self-esteem, and self-confidence when sharing her knowledge to the patient.
Educating to a patient about CHF, and assuring the patient has an understanding is showing presence in the current situation.
According the Benner "touch" shows support, and comfort. Embracing touch with patients can be so central for nursing, but must be used with discretion and boundaries. A typical common area for touch would be a pat on the shoulder for encouragement through the process of healing.

Example of pain and strategies: I had a patient who was on hospice. She had a stage 4 decubitus ulcer on her sacrum. She was in severe pain. We had many interventions to assist with pain relief. She always used music as a method of release. There were also pharmacological interventions. She was in a cradle mattress and we always used body pillows to fully elevate the affected area. She was turned every two hours.

The wife of a pt called from Florida stating that she and her husband were angry that his privacy had been violated while he was in the ER. She stated that since she was not around, the pt's ex-wife was in the ER with the pt. They were angry because the doctor came into the room and started talking about his medical problems and why he was there. Apparently the pt did not want the ex-wife to hear any of his information, but did not verbalize his feelings.
