The Equal Status Act 2000 was set up in the year 2000 and it is a law that applies the principal of equality to the disposal and provision of goods and services to the public generally. It is a collective of Acts that protect every person in Ireland, that they are not discriminated against. The Act covers nine grounds.
1. Gender
2. Marital Status
3. Family Status
4. Age
5. Disability
6. Sexual Orientation
7. Race
8. Religion
9. Membership of the Traveller Community.

The Act has been amended in 2015 and 2018, however it is constantly under review and if needed it can be amended in the Senead or Dail by the Government.

The Equal Status Act is a complex Act and has five outlining sections which cover 48 sub sections. Part 1 is the Preliminary Part, it covers the description of discrimination in general terms and the discrimination on grounds of disability. Part 2 covers Discrimination and related activities, e.g. Sexual orientation and other harassment or disposal of goods and provision of services. Part 3 Enforcement this incorporates powers to enter premises, obtain information and requirement to provide information. Part 4 is Equality Authority a short section on additional functions of authority. Part 5 is General which covers regulations and court jurisdiction. There is a schedule at the end that covers the Amendment of Employment Equality Act 1998. The Equality Act also refers to other Acts e.g. Courts Act 1981 and Licencing Act 1833 to 1999 and many more.

It is very important for the Government to keep this Act and other relevant Acts updated and current to protect every single person in Ireland. That they can live a life in a free society that is an inclusive environment without prejudice and fear.
