When reading the chapter, I am not sure if there is anything I learned to share with a colleague but one thing I am trying to internalize from the is reading is to be more empathic towards students more and try and make sure they see that I care about their progress and to have patience with them and figure out ways to help them understand on their level why what I am teaching them is important.

I would like to discuss with a colleague the following quote “Deficit theories assume that some children, because of genetic, cultural, or experiential differences, are inferior to other children--that is they have deficits that must be overcome if they are to learn.” I feel like it is obvious that experiential differences (e.g. Being raised in a home where reading occurred each day) would cause deficits to overcome. Unless the authors were simply trying to express that regardless of genetics, culture, and experience all students should be valued the same, that I fully agree with.
