This section of The Glass Castle was a window for me because it showed a life very different from my own. Jeannette and her siblings had to deal with hunger, poverty, and parents who refused to take responsibility. I have not experienced this kind of struggle, so it made me realize how difficult life was for them. It was shocking to see how Jeannette had to dig through the trash for food, and it made me appreciate having parents who provide for me. I also learned that some people, like Rex and Rose Mary, choose to live an unstable life even when they have the ability to change it. This section made me think about how children in difficult situations often have to grow up faster and take care of themselves.

Motif: Poverty

Poverty is a big part of this section in The Glass Castle. Jeannette and her siblings often do not have enough food to eat. at one point, Jeannette is so hungry that she digs through the trash at school to find food. even though the family struggles, Rex and Rosemary refuse to get steady jobs. this shows how Poverty affects the children the most because they have to take care of themselves while their parents avoid responsibility.

In this part of the story, Jeannette still believes in her dad, Rex. Even though he makes promises he doesn't keep, she wants to trust him. she hopes he will change and take care of his family.
This quote is important because it shows Jeannette's love for her father, even when he lets her down. it also shows the theme of hope vs. reality. she wants to believe in him, but as she gets older, she realizes he will not change.

One thing that repeats in the book is fire. fire appears many times, starting when Jeannette burns herself while cooking at three years old. later, she plays with fire because she is curious about it. fire is both dangerous and powerful, just like her childhood.

One big irony in the book is how Rex promises to build the glass castle, a dream house, but never does. instead, the family is always poor and struggling. this shows how Rex has big dreams but cannot take care of his family.

The book has happy and sad moments. sometimes, the tone is warm and loving, like when Rex teaches Jeannette about the stars. other times the mood is sad and serious like when Jeannette has to eat from the trash because there is no food.

This part of the Glass Castle made me think about how some people grow up in very difficult situations but still find a way to succeed. I don't have the same struggles at Jeannette, but I can relate to working hard to achieve my goals. her story shows that even if life is though, you can keep going and build a better future. it also made me appreciate having support in my life because Jeannette and her siblings had to take care of themselves.

This quote is important because it shows Rex's way of thinking. He tells Jeannette that life isn't always happy, and you have to accept both the good and the bad. at this point Jeannette's life is tough, and her family is struggling. Rex's advice might seem good, but is also reflects how he's not really taking care of his children and doesn't understand the struggles they face.
This quote stands out to me because it shows how Rex tries to teach life lessons, but his actions often cause more pain than help.
