         <description><![CDATA[<div>The time period, 1854, is important because the Jim Crow laws were in place then. Lizzie has to deal with segragation because the conducter was following the NYC law that African Americans have to wait for the dirty, smelly, and unreliable streetcars instead of the other streetcars, the humane ones. I learned that the fight for equal rights started way back in the 19th century. The historical note helped me understand that. I thought it happened in the mid 1900s. But I was about 100 years off.</div>]]></description>

Sams problem is that he doesn't knit very well and keiko is best in the class. He also misses his brother who is in the war. At the end, Keiko was sent to the desert and since it was cold, Sam knitted a scarf for her and then they started kind of becoming friends. </div>]]></description>
