Active Recall

Elaboration

Partner Activity

Educators should implement active recall activities that allow students to recall new information. For instance, create flash cards with questions on one side and answers on the other. They can also have students quiz themselves, which is a great way to check for understanding. Another example is to create concept maps that promote visual and differentiated learning.

Elaboration benefits learners by offering opportunities to make connections between prior knowledge and new information. Incorporating elaborative assignments like class discussions, informative writing, or narrative writing prompts are effective ways to promote learning.

Partner activities are great work fostering collaborative work, improve memory, and create meaningful connections to lessons. Educators can utilize Think-Pair-Share activities to allow students to brainstorm and share personal experiences with peers.

These three strategies are great for learners who have experienced trauma in their lives and need a place to sort of their feelings while effectively learning. In the process, they begin to reap the benefits of implementation of memory strategies.

Retention is the brain's ability to store and retrieve information over time. It allows learning, remembering, and understanding things around you. Retention occurs as a direct result of learning.

There are many transfers that occur within the brain. Neurons signal other neurons. Also, different parts of the brain communicate and send signals to the rest of the brain and in the process, memories are stored from one channel or stage to the next.

Without retention and transformation occurring in the brain, students would struggle recalling information, connecting prior knowledge with new information, applying knowledge, improved academic performance, and increasing confidence & motivation.
