The hiring process is very intensive. It starts with recruitment which includes putting out advertisements and job descriptions to let people know that the company is hiring. Next applicants whose resumes stand out will be given interviews. From the interviewing process, an employee or multiple employees will then be hired. The process can be very difficult as employers want to ensure that they find the best fit for their team.

Working as a Human Resource Manager requires you to know laws that are relevant to the workplace and therefore protect the company and the employees. Some laws pertain to military leave, discrimination, and equal pay. This clip shows Dwight violating basic confidentiality laws about employee health information, it is a great example of what not to do in the workplace.

No body wants to work in an environment that makes them unhappy or unmotivated. Keeping employees happy and motivated is crucial so that they can preform well at work and in turn bring in more revenue. Keeping employees happy also means less turnover, it is expensive to have employees quit and then to have to hire a replacement. Overall, it is just easier to keep morale and retention rates up.

Before a company can fire an employee, it is best to have a paper trail of previous offences so that employee cannot come back and file a wrongful termination lawsuit against the company. Many companies follow the protocol of giving a verbal warning for a first offence, written warning for a second offence, suspension and retraining for a third offence, and finally after having all of that documented, firing can happen. It is also important to know how to deal with employees who don't respond well to being fired as pictured below.

Performance evaluations are key to understanding where employees are growing and lacking. Evaluations can be costly and time consuming, and because of that are typically conducted either every six months or once a year. Performance evaluations can be conducted many different ways, some methods are 360 Degree Feedback or a Continuous Rating Scale. Shown below is an example of a bad conduction of a performance review.

Conflicts are everywhere, especially in the workplace. The Human Resource Department of any company should be equipped to handle situations and resolve them effectively. It is important to hear all sides of the story and to talk to all parties involved. It is also important to have good communication strategies and to be aware of different people way of communication style which could be; expresser, driver, relater, or analytical communication styles. Below you can see Michael resolving a conflict between Dwight and Jim.

The working environment needs to be a place where all employees are safe from dangers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) creates and enforces safety and health laws. Some things that they regulate include; means of egress, standards for fire equipment, and handling of hazardous materials. When OSHA laws are followed it protects both the employees from being injured but also the employer from any potential lawsuits.

People work to make money, making sure that employees are getting properly compensated for work is very important. Many compensation packages include pay as well as other benefits like healthcare, 401(k) plans, and paid vacation time. Having competitive compensation packages will attract people to your company but is important to also update and adjust plans based on seniority and good work performance. As seen below, Daryl asks Michael about a pay raise.

Once employees have been hired, they then need to be trained. Training can be costly but is a crucial step to having a well performing business. There are many different types of training like; technical/technology training, quality training, skills training, soft skills training, and safety training. Training should also educate employees on what is and what is not acceptable to do at work, as demonstrated in the video below.

Having a diverse workforce is very beneficial as it allows a company to have different ideas coming from different people. It is illegal for a company to discriminate against race, gender, sexual orientation, or disabilities. Diversity is the law, it allows for a broader reach amongst employees and customers, creates better communication, and creates new and better ideas and solutions. Pictured below you will see people of all types of backgrounds.
