On P.13, Wood makes the very important point that, "The whole child goes to school; therefore, decisions about physical activity, food policies, and the development of social and emotional skills are as important as curriculum choices and test results." i almost stood up and applauded as I read this. After training on Responsive Classroom and then digging deeper into this book, I am feeling more and more justified to make time for my first grade 6's to be 6's!

Pacing is Important

Reading the section about the organization and pacing of the school day caused me to reflect on my day. It stood out to me that it is now only important the amount of time we allow for each activity before moving on but also how we move on that is important. (T-S) I could almost hear myself ending a math lesson saying, "Get your tools put away, we need to get to gym on time!" I guess it is a positive that our students get to go to gym! : )

Bilingual vs. Biliterate

I found this section (pp. 34-37) to be very informative. (!!) Although aware of the struggles of a bilingual student, I hadn't really thought about the difference between being bilingual and biliterate. It certainly makes sense as I consider my experience learning and speaking Spanish in both high school and college. I may have been verging on bilingual for a time but was certainly not near being bileterate!

I agree with the pacing Diane! I too, often find myself "racing" to get things put away before a special. I think we will need to allow more time in between activities and not schedule things so close together!...I know its easier said than done!...Bryan Rice
