It was quite informative and if I wasn't already aware of these issues, I would probably be even more righteously angry than I already am. I would make it mandatory viewing for high school students, but given the state's present animosity towards teaching anything about race, I doubt it would happen.

Also, guys, the movie is called "13th." There is no "the" in the title.

It was more or less the same from start to finish. I’d learned about how messed up the prison industrial complex was before watching it, so I came into it with some knowledge already. I would say if anything, I feel more passionate about changing the way our prisons work, so that it doesn’t allow this type of injustice to continue.

It was very eye opening to see just how awful our justice system is. I knew it was already screwed up, but I didn't know it was THIS bad. I feel sick that this was and is allowed to just happen. Not to mention it made me angry thinking of all the people who have been wrongfully convicted...

It really opened my eyes to how humanity is to these people. It is amazing how blind people can be to certain issues and the way this documentary brings them to light was interesting. -Annalise

My initial reaction to Thirteenth is that I was fully aware of the injustice within our justice system, but I didn't realize the gravity of it. The film helped me realize just how terrible the treatment of those in the system is.

I enjoyed the documentary it exposed a lot of issues most people don’t know about. I feel it’s something most people who are ignorant need to watch and learn more about. I now hate Reagan and Nixon even more than I did before. America kinda sucks.

My initial reaction was that i thought it was a moving documentary. With eye an opening look at the injustices prisoners face in prison, I was honestly surprised. It’s weird the think that racial injustices are just as bad, if not worse in prison compared to the outside world

My initial reaction was anger and annoyance at the state of privatized prisons in America. The deep seeded and historical racism present in the prison system is so deeply wrong and inhumane it is demonstrable. It also made we want to personally go to hell for the simple reason of beating up Ronald Reagan. Who i already hated, but now hate even more. Hating Ronald Reagan is the vibe for today and the foreseeable future. Fuck you Ronald.

When I first saw the documentary I thought how that it was a telling of the huge injustice that African Americans went through and it was very upsetting how bad the things were. I still feel the same about it now because there is no reason that any human regardless of race should go through it overall the documentary was very informative

I think the 13th is an important documentary that covers the racial injustice that is still ongoing both behind and out of bars. The choices made within the film were powerful and I think got the message across.

I learned about a lot of this prior to watching, but I was still pretty shocked to learn about the stats. I knew about the Southern Strategy and the War on Drugs era policies but watching this really drove home how it affected people. And now I dislike Ronald and getting the statistics Reagan even more than I did, which is saying something.

I was aware of some of the issues in the prison system before, but the documentary made me realize how deeply these systems are built into America today, and how oblivious I was to it. It made me sort of think.. where have I been all my life? And why were these things so well hidden from me?

The first time I watched 13th, I was content with being taught the history that the textbooks cut from education. I can bet that there is many things that were cut out of the textbooks as a manner to keeping the American history a proud one.
Throughout the film, I had felt very conflicted with the genuine hardship and pain these people are unjustly experiencing everyday of their lives. I felt moved to start learning more about the actual history and making changes. It's part of my inspiration to continue to advocate for my people the best way I could.

My initial reaction to this film was how impactful it was in terms of the topics it touched on. In school, I was only taught the basics when it came to racial discrimination and the history of slavery, so being able to learn more about these subjects on a deeper level was really impactful. Especially after going over it in the lecture, I feel like this documentary is extremely crucial for everyone to watch. It helps connect the past to the present and can allow people to better understand how flawed this country is.

My initial reaction to watching the documentary was I couldn’t believe how badly the prison system is. I knew it was bad before but I didn’t know the extent of it. After watching it I feel like it really opened my eyes to the racial injustice system.

The manner in which the African-American society and other races have suffered under different regimes which come with an invented way to make these members of the society suffer. From the slavery to the Jim Craw system, to the mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex only to mention a few, the blacks have been brutally treated in a much inhumane way over and over.

When watching the film. I was not all that much surprised by the majority of what the film brought to light. Much of what was revealed in the film I have experienced either through friends, family, or even myself personally. I was not entirely phased when watching it. Not because of the lack of caring or interest (because I was very interested), but simply,y because this is nothing new to me. Being a black man in America, this is a very common reality for me. My father grew up in Inglewood, Ca. so he tells me of many stories that are even scarier than watching this film.
