We do not have free will because of three main reasons. We have to abide by the law, our lives are influenced heavily by those around us, and because society sets expectations for us. The law prevents the exercise of free will because it determines what behaviour is punishable. We commit actions agains the law and we will feel the consequences of that act. Individuals set expectations for us and those we know have ideas of who we should be. Society sets expectations for us as human beings. It makes us understand that we have to act in a certain way to be accepted by others.

Questions

Why is free will so important to us?

What is free will and why do we feel "free"?

Analogy
Free will is like a reflection on water because it is not really there.

Free will is the concept of our individual decisions being available to us through no means other than our own. I personally think that this is a false concept that we create to be able to withstand the weight of the idea that we are tiny and do not have any control in the world on the bigger scale besides ourselves. As a living organism our main objective is to be concerned for our own wellbeing, but as humans we are well aware of more than just our own existence, which makes it difficult to balance our sense of self in the world.
