Niels Henrik David Bohr was a Danish physicist who made contributions to understanding the atomic structure and the theory, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922.

He was the first to discover that electrons travel in separate orbits around the nucleus and that the number of electrons in the outer orbit determines the properties of an element. He discovered the atomic model which is also known as the ‘Bohr Model ‘. It shows the atom as a small positively charged nucleus surrounded by orbit by electrons. He discovered the Bohr model in 1913. Niels Bohr made important contributions to the understanding of the structure and energy of the atom, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. He also contributed to the quantum theory and liquid droplet theory.

The Bohr model shows the atom as a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons. In the Bohr model of the atom, electrons travel in defined circular orbits around the nucleus. The orbits are labelled by an integer, the quantum number n. Electrons can jump from one orbit to another by absorbing energy depending on the size of the orbit.
