The mere where Grendel's mother lives is dark and gloomy. There are sea monsters in the mere and the area is so frightening that animals fleeing from predators will face them rather than go into the mere. This reinforces the fact that Grendel's mother is a wretched and terrifying beast and that it will take a man of great strength and courage to defeat her. When describing where Grendel and his mother live on page 95 lines 1357-1361 Hrothgar says "They dwell apart among wolves on the hills, on windswept crags and treacherous Keshes"

(1520,1560)The epic describes the two swords as one being extinguished and lacking its battle abilities as it does no damage to Grendel's mother and the other a priceless heirloom that would be envied by any warrior. This sword was successful in slaying the mother. In the story the narrator uses these swords to contrast each other showing the significance of the two. The sword that slays the mother(of Grendel) only beowulf could lift the mighty sword so that shows that this sword could only be used by a person with great might, but the other sword Hrunting could be wielded by any man.

Beowulf is portrayed as a gallant princely hero opposed to Grendel's mother who is described as a demon. Page 105 lines 1518-1520 says "The hero observed that swamp-thing from hell, the tarn-hag in all her terrible strength" when describing Grendel's mother and Beowulf during their confrontation. The text also mentions that God was on the side of Beowulf and helped him defeat Grendel's mother. When she is defeated light shine down on Beowulf as if he is a great hero who has conquered a great evil.
