I like the point about questioning whether knowledge needs to be consistent or can there be contradiction? Who is the ultimate authority ? The teacher, society, or some other external force? These are all great and valid points for educators.

I resonated with the point about educators who believe in self care being a valid source of knowing and how they structure their classrooms around that. I am very much that kind of teacher.

The point about when core beliefs are challenged as a teacher with policy reforms and changes to education can be difficult. This is a wonderful and valid point that I have seen happen to teachers when polices change and they do not agree

Educators who fail at examining and dealing with their beliefs can have unanticipated consequences in their classrooms. This is an accurate statement where as an educator its crucial to deal with one self before attempting to help others.

The comparison of beliefs to a lens on a magnifying glass stood out to me. Viewing them as a guide down what may seem unfocused/blurry establishes the importance of having a good magnifying glass (a good set of beliefs). Using these beliefs to help make sense of what I deal with as a school counselor will allow me to see things much clearer and with great judgment.

I liked learning of the alternative to essentialist views of education. Being in the school counseling program is encouraging me to learn as I travel down my path. However, I feel that everyone is a valid source of knowledge, and look forward to learning through dialogue and shared interaction in this program and in my profession to create meaningful

understandings.

The categorization of beliefs on the inverted triangle in Figure 1 stresses that simply because an educator is located at the bottom does not mean they are of lesser importance. As a student in the school counseling program, it is important to acknowledge who I am in relationship to the curriculum and standards put in place in a school setting.

As a future school counselor, it is important to continuously reflect on my beliefs and rid myself of any that do not serve the well-being of my students. I will not be a great educator if I tie beliefs that do not benefit my students to who I am as a person. Therefore, constantly reflecting and carrying a willingness to change for the better is crucial for all educators.

Learning of the consequences of failing to examine my beliefs motivates me to do so, because I would never want to be a counselor who overlooks/marginalizes students who need me or misinterprets their motives/behavior. I agree this would limit my potential as a professional and would not want this to happen.
