Unfortunately, a lot of the time locally hired staff are underpaid and overworked. This causes a lot of jealousy within the working environment and can affect performance. Buddy

Again, as Richard mentioned, I'm not sure about the comparison in training between UK trained TAs and those of local knowledge. However, in an international setting it can be very helpful to have TAs with English as a first language to help EAL/SEN groups integrate quicker into an english speaking environment. They might also be more familiar with the curriculum and work more autonomously. Saying that, a lot of TAs at the school I am working at have years of experience working in the school and are very well integrated into the British curriculum. Buddy

Foreign hired TAs

Hiring TAs from neither the local culture nor from a UK background can be very advantageous to allow pupils to interact fully with different cultures, adapt their listening skills to different accents, and show humility and respect to others of different cultures. However, as a foreigner teaching or working on a non native curriculum this can be tricky for the person to integrate into the school. I have seen this with foreign teachers as well as foreign TAs who were neither British nor local to the school in which they are teaching. Buddy

The TA's in my school are mainly involved in admin tasks (helping prepare for lessons and display boards etc.) and are not trained on the curriculum. From the article it resonated that they are aware of the social and emotional needs of the children. As they spend time on duties and walking children to the bus etc. they get to see a different perspective. Its also a great help when they keep on top of behavior management during lesson time but in terms of supporting children with their learning I've not seen much evidence of this. Being in Singapore, they all speak English which is a benefit.

All of the TAs in my school are Singaporean or Malaysian. They support teachers with preparation, putting together display boards etc and also support children in their learning.
As already mentioned, the TAs stay at the school for years and all have regular training and PD. They provide stability not only to students but also to teachers. Kate
