Pretend it is 5 years from now and MPS has won an award for being a culturally competent district. Why will we have won this award?

- One measure of this could be students in all subgroups are making academic progress
- Community: Creating a culture in the school that goes beyond the school day and puts things in place for supports that are needed. This is a larger issue than just inside of the school.
-Parents that are involved in the school reflect the culture of that school. We need to provide opportunities for all families to be involved.
- If we take schools at face value, we don't always see the diversity that isn't so apparent. Collicot is one example, as it appears to be a primarily white, Irish school but after the diversity survey, it was discovered that there were many different religions and background. -Are we going further away from celebrating cultural differences? We sometimes are nervous to celebrate this as we don't want to make students feel left out (ie: Religion, holidays).
- Perhaps having students bring things in to celebrate culture could be a way to learn about different cultures rather than celebrating holidays. In primary standards, learning about traditions are included.
- This does have to do with race as well. Students are quick to use words like racist/racism but sometimes don't understand what being racist means.
- Don't ignore race - many teachers say "I don't see color - I treat everyone the same" but that actually does a disservice to students as there are many traditions/beliefs that we can learn about when we acknowledge it
