Back to School: School Supplies Drive

The day that I went to the orientation, Metrocrest had raised over 70, 000 units for children's school supplies, ranging from backpacks that were simple, others with designs like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Frozen, pencils, pens, highlighters, Crayons, colored pencils, utility boxes, construction paper, notebook paper, and paper pads. They were loaded up onto a large school bus and we formed an assembly line to begin with for the front, and as we got closer to the back, we opened the emergency hatch, and another man and I began the "one trip for groceries" method, taking on about thirty (rather heavy) bags at a time, each time trying to out do one another. That led to all of the others to join in the same method. We finished in about half an hour, and the manager told us they were expecting the process to take much longer, so we received the amount of hours promised and were allowed to go.

Serving Those Who Still Stand - Metrocrest Services

Metrocrest is a non-profit organization to help individuals who are down on their luck. Struggling day to day. They serve primarily families that cannot provide food for themselves and their children, those that are elderly, but don't want to move to nursery homes, and people that have paid their rent, but cannot afford food after. They receive help in the forms of labor and donations. The labor comes primarily through volunteers and individuals who have been ordered by the United States Judicial System to provide community service. Donations come from the community itself, varying from other families who wish to help those in need, as well as various organizations like the local police and fire departments, schools, athletic organizations and churches.

                                   Why Choose Metrocrest?

To be completely honest, I ended up volunteering for the very first opportunity that I had to get my hours after noticing I had about a week left on the Service Learning timeframe. I just happened to luck out when I was messaged from Metrocrest about the volunteering, because they were an awesome group that was well organized and focused on providing for the community. The staff was always busy, usually making calls for donations, or making sure that everything was flowing smoothly. I ended up doing the job of a stock associate at my last job, so it was rather easy.

I didn't actually interact with anyone that was actually there for assistance (with the exception of helping a woman and her daughter load the groceries into their car), but I did see what was done for them. There was a defined process of how clients would receive food: There name would be given at the front desk, which would make a doorbell sound when the list of the goods they were to receive. Usually vegetables, fruit, bread and meat products, personal hygiene and other utensils, as well as a few luxury items, like sweets or a soda (which those were actually scarce. When they checked out, the volunteer who was helping the client would help them take their groceries to their car and bid them farewell. What I ended up doing was just unloading a bunch of the goods (which all the other volunteers seemed to scatter) from the transportation trucks.

There were at least a dozen times that I heard the "doorbell", meaning that there were possibly twelve families that were helped within four hours. Twelve families got items that would help them, but more specifically, their kids, as well as the elderly that didn't want to just wait to die in a nursery home, but rather live each day independently. That was what caught my eye. I still plan to go back and donate supplies that I saw were scarce, like sodas, coloring books, notepads, various hygiene products and batteries. You never fully understand what one thing donated can do, or what a few hours of your time for a community can bring about. For those of you who have never really had to struggle with money or food, volunteering at Metrocrest can give you more insight into how lucky you were to be born into a family that has the little things that get taken for granted everyday. The families and people that depend on the donations of others struggle to survive each day, so the least I can do is work in an air-conditioned warehouse, and occasionally have to sweat outside.

English 1301 is a class that is meant to help broaden your mind to see other points of view. Volunteering to nonprofit organizations help an individual see things that they take for granted. You are able to help those who are physically or mentally handicapped, aren't financially inclined, or need a mentor, like kids who need to have a "big brother or sister". It also can help build a moral structure, or strengthen it if it already is there.
