A stroke is a medical emergency that happens when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted and/or reduced preventing brain tissue from getting enough oxygen and nutrients. Without oxygen the brain cells begin to die within minutes. Strokes can cause long-term damage, disability or even death, depending on how severe they are and how quickly treatment is provided.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is the most common contributor to having a stroke. This is because of the constant high pressure against the walls of the arteries which causes them to be weakened over time. When arteries become weak, they can become more narrow and/or clogged which can reduce/block blood flow to the brain. It can also cause an artery to burst or leak, which can cause a hemorrhagic stroke. If the artery becomes damaged, they a more likely to develop plaque or clots. If a clot travels to the brain, it can block a blood vessel and cut off oxygen to that area.

Having a heart disease contributes to having a stroke because it affects how efficient the heart pumps blood and how it flows throughout the body. Blood clots can form due to irregular heartbeats (atrial fibrillation) and can travel to the brain and block an artery. In addition, having a weak heart (heart failure) means that the heart can pump blood efficiently. Also having damaged arteries can cause blockages to form.

The CDC has a program called Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program (PCNASP). This program uses evident based systems to help prevent and treat strokes effectively, it’s important to have systems in place that can quickly identify when someone is having a stroke and get them to a hospital that specializes in stroke care, provide high-quality treatment and rehab right away, and support patients as they return to their regular doctors and daily life, focusing on lowering the chances of having another stroke by managing risk factors.

The Million Hearts initiative is led by the CDC and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, aims to prevent heart attacks and strokes by focusing on a few key strategies. In communities, the focus is on preventing problems before they start—like helping people quit smoking, cutting back on salt in diets, and encouraging regular physical activity. In healthcare settings, it involves things like making sure patients use aspirin when it’s right for them, keeping blood pressure and cholesterol under control, and supporting people in quitting smoking. They also use technology to catch health risks earlier and manage them better, while encouraging patients and families to be active participants in their health care decisions.

Source(s):

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/66/wr/mm6618a5.htm

https://millionhearts.hhs.gov/

🩸Monitoring your blood pressure and getting it treated if it’s high is one of the most important things you can do for your heart and overall vascular health. Properly managing your blood pressure can reduce the chances of having a stroke. Reducing the amount of salt consumption, avoiding high cholesterol foods, eating fruits and vegetables daily, exercise consistently, quit smoking, and limit or stop drinking alcohol.

Source:

https://www.health.harvard.edu/womens-health/8-things-you-can-do-to-prevent-a-strokeLinks to an external site.

🩺 Atrial fibrillation is a type of irregular heartbeat that can cause blood clots to form in the heart. If one of those clots travels to the brain, it can lead to a stroke. It increases the risk of stroke by nearly five times, so it’s something that shouldn’t be ignored and should be monitored regularly.

Source:

https://www.health.harvard.edu/womens-health/8-things-you-can-do-to-prevent-a-stroke

Hispanics are more likely to suffer from a stroke due to language barriers, less access to healthcare, and lower rates of insurance coverage can delay the diagnosis and treatment of stroke risk factors. Cultural factors, like dietary habits and less frequent preventative care visits, can also increase stroke risk. In both groups, the challenges are about more than just individual health—they’re also tied to systemic inequalities and social determinants of health, like income, education, and access to healthcare.

Source:

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/stroke/symptoms-causes/syc-20350113#:~:text=Race%20or%20ethnicity%20—%20African%20American,of%20strokes%20than%20are%20men
