The short article from the Library of Congress outlines some of the standard ideas associated with the American dream. The Langston Hughes poems and the song "My Shot" capture some of the complicated emotions, ambitions, and desires related to the American Dream. Our experiences with and ideas about that dream may be similar to and different from these. Then, what, to you, is the American Dream? Answer with reference to some of this week's reading. What is a movie, video, song, picture, or other representation that captures the American dream for you? Link to that here and explain your choice. BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR NAME SO THAT YOU RECEIVE CREDIT FOR YOUR WORK.

I believe that once you find peace and happiness with how you are living your life, you've reached the American dream. The article, 'What is the American Dream?", mentions the Declaration of Independence and the unalienable rights, including liberty, life, and the pursuit of happiness. These unalienable rights reinforce the idea that once someone finds peace and happiness in their life, they have reached the American Dream. A movie that captures the American Dream is The Pursuit of Happyness. This movie does a good job of showing the challenges that many face when trying to find peace within their lives.

*Nancy Sanchez

I believe the American Dream is having the freedom to choose your career in order to make an honest living. This echoes the writing of Thomas Wolfe who defined the American Dream as the ability "to live, to work, to be himself..." I think that the American Dream is still obtainable. We live in a more inclusive society than our grandparents. The internet allows us to educate ourselves and network more easily than before. One of my favorite songs growing up echoes the message of the American Dream. In the 1994 single Juicy by The Notorious B.I.G, Christopher Wallace(Notorious B.I.G) celebrates how he achieved his dream of becoming a recording artist. "Now I'm in the limelight cause I rhyme tight." He also mentions how his success has lifted those close to him out of poverty. "Now my whole crew is loungin', celebrating everyday, no more public housing".

Max Whittet

To me, the American dream is something that is mentioned a lot more than it is accomplished. The most accepted meaning has changed over time but the general idea is still there. Living in America will give you the best chance at becoming successful and living a happy life. The ways you get there are what has changed. I've met plenty of people who had different perceptions of the American dream, and some that didn't believe in it. Langston Hughes shows the reality of getting let down by your dreams.
He writes "What happens to a dream deferred?/Does it dry up/like a raisin in the sun?/Or fester like a sore—." Some people have definitely seen the harsh reality of the American dream and how not everyone is going to meet their expectations. The American dream was a great concept, but not so much as reality over the years.

Diego Garcia Gonzalez

Like many others, I always thought that the American dream is to have a fancy home, live independently instead of living with your parents after high school, and have a fancy car. However, not all American are happy about being rich. According to Melissa Chan, "How Winning the Lottery Makes You Miserable," "People commit suicide. People run through their Money" (pg.1). Rich people did not have a good outcome of being rich because they didn't know how to manage their finance correctly. When you become too rich, you become distant from others in fear of losing your money.
There is this one video I came upon on Facebook the other day, and It talks about a Korean couple in their 40 living with their in-law's parents' house is truly the American dream for him. Though he was hesitant at first, it eventually worked out for him. I think the video helps me realize that having your parents and family to be there to support your every step to succeed is truly the American dream. ( I don't know the name of the video that I came upon on Facebook page)

-Mai Tang Her
