On pg. 47, the cops are questioning anyone and everyone near the shooting. The cops then go to the Shopkeeper and question him. Tariq had just been there and he forgot his change. Everyone thinks that "Rocky", the shopkeeper, was calling "Stop, thief!", but he was really going to give Tariq back his change. When Rocky told this to the reporters, they turned Tariq into the criminal. This quote is from Rocky's point of view. "Reporter - 'So you didn't feel threatened?', Rocky - 'From Tariq? Never once.' They leave again and again, unsatisfied. Now the news people are at it too. Calling Tariq 'an armed robbery suspect'. I don't know where they get these tales. I've never said a thing against him. Not a single thing to make it sound like that rumor could be true. Who knows where they're getting it. I used to read the paper in the mornings. Used to take in every word. Now I don't know what to believe." The motivation behind the reporters and news analysts, from my perspective, is that they are singling Tariq out on account of his race.

The motivation in chapter 2 was explained, by the shooters friend, Tom Arlen. Jack Franklin, the shooter, had just borrowed Tom's car for a few days. Then he saw a bunch of people gathered around in a circle filled with gang members. There was a white man in the middle, who all the gang members were taunting and making fun of. Jack had told him to let him alone, but they wouldn't stop. Finally, one of the gang members threatened Jack with a gun. That's when Jack took action. Pg. 21, "Pop-pop. The kid staggered forward , fell. The other gang boys scattered. Jack spun in a slow circle. His arm was still raised - he had a gun, too. The big white guy turned toward Jack, looking grateful. I shook my head. Jack Franklin. Keeping the peace. We were just talking about it, on my porch. About how everything on the streets is going to sh*t because good citizens are afraid to stand up." The motivation for Jack, was, he saw someone of his own race being bullied and he decided to keep the peace. He never thought of harming anyone, until harm was inflicted on him.

I noticed that in Chapter 1, there were some motivations by some of the witnesses, to try and help save Tariq Johnson , the boy that was shot. One bystander, Jennica tried to save him with CPR, because she knew him, and couldn't bear to see him die. Pg, 5, "Jennica knelt beside him, in the spreading gray-white pool. 'We got to go', I told her, but she could not be moved. 'One-two-three-four-five,' she chanted, though the life was gone from his body. She wouldn't leave, wouldn't stop crying. I couldn't get her up. She stayed there, pumping on his chest and whatnot, a fierce kinda goddess in the half-light." Jennica could not be moved because she knew Tariq, and it didn't really matter if you knew the person that was shot. You still would want to save them.

Throughout the whole book Tariq's little sister just wants to remember him and think about what he did for her. On pg. 117, she says,
"It's scary to go to sleep now.
The sounds in my room are the same.
The look of the dark is the same,
And the glow of my Smurfette night light.
But if there are monsters under my bed,
I won't know about it.
I won't be safe.
Tariq cast a magic spell to keep them out.
I don't know how long it will last,
Now that he's gone."
Her motivation is that, as long as she remembers Tariq, he will always be there.

Tariq's mom is motivated by something inside her. She aches for Tariq, but he will never be there again. She fights it every day, but eventually she can't take the reporters or the news people, or the people that try to comfort her. Pg. 209, "The pain constricts in my chest. Out of nowhere, like it happens. 'My baby is dead!' I scream at her. My fingers claw the back of the couch. For a while, I can't breathe. For a while, I don't know. I don't know. I can't. I'm not going to make it. 'All the fight I got in me,' I tell her, 'Is just to get through this." Someone or something can't make you mad. You have to be motivated by something. Tariq's death was a big eye-opener to everyone, especially his mom.

Tariq's little sister, Tina, found a knife that he used to use when he was in the gang he was affiliated with. Nobody else knows about the knife. Even the cops searched the house, but Tina hid it so well, they didn't find it. She then decides to sneak out at night and bury the knife, right next to where he was buried. Tina doesn't want anyone finding it and having Tariq accused of this, and she knows the cops will never look next to Tariq's grave. She is motivated by the fact that Tariq will be accused of something that is not true. and that the reporters will make him out to be the bad guy. Pg. 311,
"Tariq's knife is very heavy
But no one can see it
Backpacks are good for hiding things
People look at me walking, though
Maybe they guess
Maybe they know
Faces are not good for hiding things".
