My name is Galen Muskat, I'm 28 years old, and I have lived in the Cambridge area for almost four years now.

I graduated from Amherst College in 2017 with a degree in History. Afterwards, I worked in higher education -- first, at the Tuck School of Business as a Research Assistant and Academic Coordinator for several professors, and then at Harvard's Graduate School of Education as an Online Programs Designer and Coordinator. The programs I designed at HGSE were aimed at primary and secondary school educators, and seeing their work and the students they interacted with daily led me to finally pursue a degree in education and teacher licensure -- something that had long been on my mind, but for which I hadn't quite felt ready -- nor mature enough! -- until after several years cutting my teeth in the workforce.

That being said, I am the newbie of newbies in education: this past semester as a 2nd grade intern at BB&N was my first working in and leading a classroom (save for a few substitute roles here and there as an undergrad), and I'll be a 6th grade intern from January to June. I'm eager to learn as much as I can from all of you in this course. I want to make the most of this opportunity, however brief it may be, so that I can begin to understand what it means to create an inclusive classroom where all students can succeed and feel welcome and safe.

A bit about me: I have a hard time sitting still (too many fun things to do, always!) and love to get my energy out by cycling (bi- and uni-), taking walks in Cambridge (solo, with dogs, and/or with friends), playing guitar, cooking and baking (and eating, of course), facing off over a board game...sheesh -- the list is endless, it feels. As intense as I can be about academics, I aim to learn from the undergraduate experience I put myself through by trying to learn to balance school/work with rest/self-care/nourishment.
