I learned that TAB/Choice-Based art doesn't mean kids only learn about and explore media. Teachers like Tracy Skeels (who presented this year)add layers of big ideas, personal meaning, historical connections, and artist mentors. I would love to be able to promote this approach more within our schools.

I viewed an excellent presentation by a Baltimore City art teacher - she presented on her process of creating a mural project with her students in response to the Freddie Gray tragedy. Aside from seeing another school's point of view on the events that transpired in the spring of 2015, I learned that it's normal for lessons to grow and change organically as you teach them. Sometimes you may have to adapt, reteach, and modify your units as you go!

I went to two really fun and informative workshops about units connected to pop culture. One was about teaching comics in the classroom (which can also be a great cross-curricular unit with English Language Arts). They gave be a ton of lesson plans and downloadable resources. The other was about teaching graffiti art and creating stencils. I also went to a lecture about cyanotypes and anthotypes that was very useful. I'm definitely going to explore these media and techniques in my classroom!

I attended several choice-based classroom lectures that were very exciting. It was interesting to see how each teacher and department structured their class time and course differently to provide enough structure to teach skills and enough freedom to encourage the students to address the big ideas they find engaging.

I attended a session presented by Olivia Gude and 3 other art educators related to personal meaning. I found this session to be the most influential session I observed. It has informed my planning process in relation to framing challenges around the narrative of the student. Not only is this a means of expression for the student but it will develop their ability to make statements with their work on a more informal basis. I find that often times students are reluctant to share personal stories and this process allows the level of intimidation to be removed. Combining experimentation with a narrative theme is inviting to all ability levels. I can't wait to revamp my strategies this spring and for next year!
Dena Fiat

The conference....I'm not sure it was one particular workshop or ahha moment. The energy I bring back from the conference is worth it. As an elementary teacher, I am always on my own. Trading ideas, working with peers, and seeing so much art gives me positive energy. I seem to lose that energy throughout the year, so the conference charges me to finish the year on a more positive note.
