GED Subject Checklists - Thrailkill

Currently, I have feedback sheets for each of our paper Pre-Ready tests that tell the student the basic skill the question was assessing and suggestions for where to find more practice problems. Most of my students just want to know if they passed and don't use the feedback sheet as a study tool.

I'd like to create a checklist for each subject using the GEDTS high impact indicators as well as a few other commonly tested objectives. On a recent webinar that I watched, a HiSet correctional educator showed checklists he had made from a textbook that students could use to check their progress towards passing each subject of the HiSet test.

This fits in with the UDL goal of multiple means of engagement. Students would be able to self-reflect on how well they know the testable topics. It would also be a way to remind students of their goal and break down the larger goal of passing the test in to more manageable steps.

Math Anxiety - Thrailkill

I currently have several students who are very high strung and emotional about their inability to do math. And there are lots of other students who have negative past experiences with math.

In the past, I have reviewed test-taking strategies by going over a handout, but I'd like to be more strategic about helping these students. I like the idea of using simulations to demonstrate coping skills which was in the UDL section on self-regulation. Students could play the part of the test taker and act out how they would respond in a stressful test taking situation. That would help students to manage their frustration and develop internal coping skills.
