It is important, in my opinion for students to be able to understand the differences between credible information and those that are not. They need to be able to identify fact vs. fiction vs. opinion. Students also need to learn how to synthesize information from multiple resources to create and/or produce new digital media or content.

Even though I currently do not work in a school library setting, the last three years I taught a class of 8th graders. These students visited me in my classroom every other day. I had no direction from the administration, she just said these kids will come to you every other day for nine weeks, then you'll get a new class; teach them what you think is important. So, I relied heavily upon a resource that I helped to create, I-SAIL. I-SAIL is an acronym for Illinois Standards Aligned Instruction for Libraries and is currently the statewide model library curricular framework. You can find the complete document broken up by age group on the www.islma.org website. I-SAIL provided me with benchmarks to target with my students and linked those benchmarks to the Common Core ELA, Social Studies, and Science Standards; the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner; and ISTE's NETs Standards for Students. I-SAIL is showcased in resources under each of my top skills taught.
