Thomas Hurst and Electrical Team

It’s always good to have a Plan B – those are the words of Chief Engineer Peter Fallon as he faced another challenge from the boilers in John Dalton Tower. The boilers are old and require lots of TLC to keep them running, so when they stopped working last week and parts were on order, Peter had Plans B and C up his sleeve. Plan B saw Peter’s team putting additional heaters in known cold spots within the tower and running air conditioning units in heat mode to ensure the building was at a comfortable temperature for building occupants.

Building users and stakeholders were kept informed via email and intranet updates, and, as a result, complaints were kept to a minimum. This was a great example of the ‘one team’ approach with colleagues in Facilities, in particular Assistant Facilities Manager Thomas Hurst who helped facilitate the distribution of the supplementary heaters alongside the Electrical Team. Well done!

Craig has just completed his first move as a Space Planner, co-locating 20 staff from students services together in to All Saints. The feedback from the staff has been really positive:

'I have nothing but positive things to say. The moved seemed efficient and all the equipment was set up right (and where there were minor errors or issues these were very quickly resolved). I did not meet the full team, but I just wanted to add that Craig is an absolute star! He was super helpful and so friendly! He also has very good taste in scarves. I also met Adnan who was again very nice and friendly. Apologies this feedback isn’t more constructive, it’s simply because from my perspective your team did a grand job so there’s no feedback on what could be improved!' - Gillian Smith

'Craig was – and is – a star!! He has been so friendly and accommodating and made our new space really lovely before our arrival. He is also very keen on reusing furniture and other office items which appeals to my values of sustainability. Craig is our new best friend here in Learner Development – thank-you!!! ' - Brigid Callaghan

'Just to say thanks and how impressed I was with the efficiency and friendliness of the team. Our desks were set up in record time and I love my new home.' - Louise Livesey

'I just wanted to thank you all for how smoothly the move from the BS to All Saints has gone for our team. Craig was fantastic, helpful and approachable, and the move has been smooth. Thanks again.' - Joe Greenwood

The Catering team now have over 190 MMU student staff trained and on the books as casual baristas / catering assistants, shift team leaders and marketing / promotion assistants.
Ben Collier, Head of Catering, Retail & Hospitality said; 'Without the fundamental change in the catering staffing model, away from agency and towards student staff over summer, the department would have had serious problems in operating all of it's outlets this term. The combined effects of Covid-19 and Brexit meant that quality, experienced agency staff were either in very high demand or had left the country by the time term one started.'
Catering managers have been delighted by how quickly the student staff have adapted to the demands of the operation and employing our own students in our outlets helps provide ownership of the service.
In addition to saving on expensive agency fees and vat payments, the service expects to put over £200,000 back into our students' pockets in 2021/22 via Jobs4Students.

Jamie has pulled the stops out for me over the last few days and weeks updating the Evacuation Plans. The pressure has been on to put measures in place due to the changes in Evacuation from buildings, as such we have had to review and update the Evacuation Plans for each building and provide additional material for the Faculties and Academics. Jamie is always helpful and made our lives just a little bit easier. Massive thanks Jamie from Dean Nankivell, keep up the great work.

I wanted to let you know how impressed I am with the Print Services facility. Melvin is excellent-nothing is too much trouble for him. He has been very accommodating with doing some rush jobs for me, and has made the process as easy and stress free as possible. He really does go above and beyond.
