Othello is married to Desdemona and at the start of the play they are treated as equals and their love is apparent. But contridictory to that at the beginning of the play Iago and Emilia have been established to be married but they do not love each other as they continually bicker at one another. But as the play progresses and Iago puts his plan in motion we see how he uses Othello's love for Desdemona to his advantage. When Iago preys on Othello's love he is preying on Othello's insecurities and worries, which leads to their ultimate demise. This is an example of love leading to insecurities which leads to more trouble. Iago is jealous of Othello choosing Cassio as his lieutenant over his self. According to Iago himself, he is around 46 years old and for nearly 15-20 years he has been leading men in battle. Cassio is younger then Iago and thus in Iago's eyes is less experienced. Othello is a fool for choosing a man with less experience over one with more. This theme was shown between Othello and Desdemona. While looking at this from a feminist perspective you can see that in the beginning of their relationship, the "pure" part, they were equals in the relationship. Up until Othello was manipulated by Iago and lost all trust in his wife. Once he lost trust in her he treated her poorly, and became the stereotypical controlling husband. As he becomes more controlling, you Desdemona wanting to anything to prove herself or to please her husband .

Iago tries to ruin Cassio and Othello by using Cassio to trick Othello into thinking his wife Desdemona cheated on him, this leads to Othello murdering his wife and killing himself making Iago the main suspect because he gets confronted by his wife which makes the cops arrest him. So this is one of the main themes because it shows how lust for power can lead to ones self destruction. In Othello near the end, Othello no longer listens to his wife, he starts to believe the many tricks and lies Iago has said. The woman in this play serves no purpose other than to be a pawn in Iago's plot to take down Othello. Iago uses the complex theme of love to his advantage. He tells Othello that Desdemona does not love him the way he does. This can be seen in every relationship in the play. For example, Desdemona's father holds power over her, and he is very upset and offended when she denies him to marry Othello. Othello also holds power over her, and likewise he feels offended when he believes she denies him by cheating on him. It is obvious that men feel as though women are obligated to be loyal to them, but they have no obligation of loyalty to them.

Othello tells Brabantio he has not used any type of magic or witchcraft on Desdemona she just fell in love with him through the telling of his war stories. This is portrayed in the book when Desdemona's father learns of her marriage to Othello. Her father instantly claim that their love cannot be true and that Othello used witchcraft and potions to woo her into marring him. Despite his position in society he is still seen as a black man at his core, which at the time was seen as less than human. This is shown again at the end of the book when he is surrounded by guards after killing Desdemona.
