When going through Tsim Sha Tsui, it's hard to believe that such a sophisticated and built-up region was once a fishing community. Did you know that before the peace agreement that concluded the first opium war, Hong Kong was a fishing and farming community as well as a salt producing site? Because Tsim Sha Tsui is a peninsula on the tip of the Kowloon Peninsula that overlooks Victoria Harbour and is exposed to the sea, areas of Tsim Sha Tsui were fishing communities. Villages would have access to fresh saltwater as well as ocean-caught seafood.

Post-Colonial: Tsim Sha Tsui

Tsim Sha Tsui is becoming one of Hong Kong's most popular tourist destinations. Most of the media in Hong Kong is branded by this post-colonial perspective of Tsim Sha Tsui. If you Google 'Hong Kong,' you won't be able to see anything except the tall skyscrapers, dazzling skyline, and city-scape, urbanized streets that dominate modern-day Hong Kong. Following the closure of the Kai Tak Airport, Tsim Sha Tsui was allowed to create and build bigger, larger buildings parallel to the neighborhood, comparable to Central. Given that ethnically Chinese people had prospered close to the impact of Britain and colonial styles, given the ruins of buildings like the clock tower, Tsim Sha Tsui has undoubtedly assimilated both local and national cultures.

If you're merely traveling through Tsim Sha Tsui or wandering around, you'll observe 1881 Heritage. Questions like 'When was this building built?' go across your mind as you walk by the colonial structure. The ancient Marine Police Headquarters, now known as 1881 Heritage, is located here. It served as a police station during Hong Kong's colonial period, but it is now a commercial center and a tourist attraction in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Even from colonial times to the present, TST has remained a tertiary sector. Even during colonial times, the city's main industries were transportation, commerce, and tourism. The Treaty of Nanking, which concluded the first opium war and was signed by the Daoguang Emperor after the conflict of 1842, handed the island up to Britain. This was the period when the British colony began naming streets, which explains why Tsim Sha Tsui has so many colonial and European-styled names. Several structures were constructed in the colonial, gothic European structural style during the colonial period. The Old Marine Police Headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui, currently known as 1881 Heritage, is an example of a structure that falls under this category. It was once the headquarters of the Marine Police and served as a base throughout the colonial period.

Star Ferry Pier, Tsim Sha Tsui

This iconic ferry is inextricably linked to the Hong Kong people's culture. This ferry acts as both a transit system and a tourist attraction. It runs between Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and Victoria Harbour, transporting people. The star ferry, which goes back to the colonial era and is almost 120 years old, is one of Hong Kong's oldest modes of transportation. During the 1960s, the British government's decision to raise the cost of a boat ride was criticized as calm protests by Hong Kong residents began to arise. This demonstrates the star ferry's influence on Hong Kong residents, and it continues to fulfill its role today, whether for tourism purposes or traveling around the bustling metropolis.

You might be able to tell from the name of this colonial structure that the current Clock Tower tourist photo spot was formerly a Kowloon-Canton railroad station. The Tsim Sha Tsui station's main structure was dismantled in 1978, although railway lines can still be seen on the tiled floors of the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, serving as a reminder of Hong Kong's colonial past.

In compared to the colonial structures on this map, the Avenue of Stars is a considerably newer development. Because of the sculptures of iconic individuals that are significant to many Hong Kong citizens, the Avenue of Stars is an example of a post-colonial, contemporary edifice that is still part of Hong Kong's culture. The hand print of Leslie Cheung, a Hong Kong singer and actor who made significant contributions to the world of Cantopop and fully exposed the outside world to Hong Kong culture.
