To me the ocean is beautiful, vast, and intriguingly alien in that it feels like another world which is full of life entirely unique to what we experience on land. I would love to get the opportunity to explore the ocean more. I live by the sea and love that I do, I regularly visit the beach to sit and read, or find myself hiking along the gorgeous coastline – it helps me feel relaxed and at peace.

Simultaneously however, I deeply worry about our oceans. I worry how collective humanity appears to be apathetic to the oceans; via overfishing, polluting, and global warming we are at risk of destroying the wonder that is our oceans.

The ocean to me seems tranquil yet scary. Its the fear of the unknown and the unpredictability of it. How it can change from beautiful waves to huge reckless waves in a blink of an eye is absolutely unbelievable. Its daunting yet it seems like its calling me to explore it. I have chosen this image because I think it shows its emptiness and tranquility yet the colors are dark suggesting something more mysterious.
However the life in the ocean is beautiful . From tiny plankton all the way up to huge blue whales. I love all ocean life and I cannot wait to work alongside them. Helping conserve them and learning more things about them.

To me, the ocean - & there is only one contiguous ocean on Earth – is the source of all life on our planet; this is the environment from which all living organisms originated around 3.8 billion years ago. It is probable that hydro-thermal vents (so-called ‘black smokers’) in the deep ocean played a key role in this origin. And may exist elsewhere in the solar system; eg Saturn's moon, Enceladus. Hence my picture of a ‘black smoker’ as an oceanic feature that has great significance to us all.

The ocean is probably the greatest nature force on the planet. I am Portuguese, born in Lisbon, I have therefore always been in contact with the Atlantic. My holidays were mostly spent in the southwestern coast of Portugal, one of the most beautiful places on earth. The
ocean there is so pure, magnificent, strong and
aggressive, still it brings me peace of mind just to sit there on the golden sands and watch and hear the waves breaking. Sometimes we are even lucky enough to watch Dolphins at sunset. It is dangerous. What lies beyond our sight is mostly unknown and mysterious. But rather than fear I have an enormous respect for it and I never defy it.

Here is a picture I took in Victoria, Australia. One of my top dives watching these amazing creatures.

i feel being by the ocean puts you in a better mood, feeling relaxed or feeling excitement. I live a short walk from the sea and have spent much of my childhood holidaying with my family around the coasts of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. And so being by the ocean feels homely and i couldn't imagine living somewhere and not being able to walk to the beach. Where i feel my most relaxed is at Durdle Door (the image below) its my favourite place and i love just floating and bobbing up and down on the crystal clear waters feeling so alive. I also love bodyboarding on high waves in Cornwall its so exhilirating and exciting, you can find the best waves in Perranporth and in Newquay. I also love swimming in the sea both home and abroad, it always feels so refreshing. So in conclusion the ocean to me means home, memories, excitement and relaxation.

I am in awe of how everything works perfectly together and the amazing marine life that lies beneath the waves. I do not live near the beach, but it's where my heart is. Staring out into the open waters always makes me feel I belong. Learning about anything ocean related , excites me, and that is why the ocean means Joy to me.

It's beautiful, calming and full of life. Without the ocean there would be no us. The water has always been photographic and poetic inspiration for me; capturing the life that thrive on the shorelines; the storms that batter the cliffs and the tranquil days in the sun. For now, my photography has brought upon a wonder for the natural world. The seas in particular are an unexplored world, often misunderstood and maltreated. I would love to learn more about the life beneath the surface so in the future I can do something to help reverse the devastating impact of human life, to save the small details we haven't come to appreciate yet.

I am hoping to study geography at the university of Southampton next year and the issue of climate change and the effects this is having on our ocean is so interesting to me but also so worrying. The oceans provide livelihoods for so many but ultimately it is the home to so many ecosystems such as coral reefs and beautiful organisms that are at risk of being extinct. I could talk for hours about the importance of our oceans and how vital it is that we protect it 😊

The ocean gave me so many happy memories to the point where I can't even remember half of them. Although, I live in the Midlands, my family travel a lot to the point where I have many different experiences with different types of marine life and instantly fell in love. I even made a GCSE art project on marine life and seascapes. To find out that people are hurting the ocean and its marine life kills me. I've watched documentaries that have literally brought tears to my eyes and I knew at that moment I wanted to help in the protection of the ocean.

It provides us with resources and has helped shaped civilisations for thousands of years, dating back to the time of Yu the Great in China and to now where it has helped accelerate globalisation. But over the years the sustainability of our actions has declined, resulting in significant losses to the biodiversity and deep sea environment. It is appalling and as a frequent surfer it becomes more and more apparent to me as each year goes past. The ocean also gives us an opportunity to interact with incredible forms of nature, in a unique way. This is why the Ocean is so important to me.

The importance of the ocean for all of us.
The importance of the ocean for all of us.
The Ocean is hugely important for me and the entire human race.

Where do I even begin? To have to describe the ocean with a few words would not be doing it justice.

The importance of the ocean
The importance of the ocean
I have grown up on the coast and could not imagine my life without the sea and the peaceful way it makes me feel.

It's a whole new world
It is a strange environment which I have always wondered about every time I've walked along the coastlines or seen sea creatures in aquariums. I have always wondered what kind of ecosystem it is compared to the surface and it is my dream to learn more about the sea creatures that live below it. Furthermore I always want to learn ways of how we can protect it from pollution so I feel that learning about the ocean would help me do that.

I live on the south-west coast of England and have grown up with the waves since birth.

The ocean is home to me. I've grown up with it just short of five minutes away from my house. (living in Florida and then in California). It's beautiful, calming and full of life. Without the ocean there would be no us. I live in the water, from surfing, to scuba diving, salt water runs in my veins and I want to do anything to protect it. The ocean is so strong but it's fragile and I can say I see it first hand suffering from the causes we've created. We need to work together to stop this horrifying ending.

It is like another world, another dimension. With uncountable kinds of life, it's one of the most curious parts of our planet, because more than 80% of it is still unexplored! i feel being by the ocean puts you in a better mood, feeling relaxed or feeling excitement.

Thou glorious mirror, where the Almighty’s form
Glasses itself in tempests; in all time,
Calm or convulsed—in breeze, or gale, or storm,
Icing the pole, or in the torrid clime
Dark-heaving;—boundless, endless, and sublime—
The image of Eternity—the throne
Of the Invisible; even from out thy slime
The monsters of the deep are made; each zone
Obeys thee: thou goest forth, dread, fathomless, alone.

Lord Byron “Childe Harold's Pilgrimage”
Hard to find better words than this.

I'm gobsmacked that there is such a variety of life in our seas, from the deepest parts of our oceans to our shallow coastal beaches and coves. This 'fried egg' jellyfish was one of many seen last year in the Mediterranean, often drawing crowds to the cliffs in Greece.

'Black smokers'

Firstly, the ocean is important to me because it is a beautiful place that gives me good energy. I love diving and surfing. I dived over a beautiful coral reef today and swam with whale sharks yesterday. I feel so lucky to have had such wonderful experiences but I also love learning about everything to do with the ocean and “how it works” from the the biology, chemistry and physics. I also really care about the ocean and its in habitants and worry about human impacts and the effect on the whole system.

To me, the ocean is a place of calm, and that is why I chose this image. It is just under the surface, where things are quieter, the sun doesn't feel as harsh, and the water surrounds you. When the conditions are too rough to swim, even just seeing the ocean brings me so much tranquility. I have found that although I am young, I plan to live close to an ocean or sea the rest of my life in order to be happy. I am very interested in learning more, and am currently planning my future around marine science.

Just like the land we live on, the ocean is full of more species than we can ever imagine and having the privilege to be able to explore even a tiny fraction of it in the shallows abroad has brought me so much joy throughout my life . There was no greater feeling of awe or wonder than when you occasionally saw a fish swimming near your feet or a jelly fish whilst wading through the shore on a sunny beach holiday when you were younger and even now. As I have gotten older when I visit the sea I no longer wish to go to the rock pools, I want to know what all the wonders that live below the water in the deep sea are

A mystical diverse other world

I love the ocean. It's mystical. It's scary. It's brilliant. The ocean covers the majority of our planet's surface, yet we know only a little about it. It's a vast space filled with a diversity of animals, plants, and the unknown. It is absolutely breathtaking. It's gorgeous with its crashing waves and glassy water and its coral reefs and fun animals. It's amazing how everything co-exists with one another. The animals are so diverse and unique as well as the plants that come in all different shapes and sizes. It is so calm on some days and wild and untamed on others. It makes me happy. It just does. Everything about the ocean intrigues me. From the rocks that develop in crevices and patterns on the sandy shores and the seashells to the unknown depths where deadly animals and end of the world tremors awake. It makes me feel alive. I love how it seems to be living too, kind of like a friend of mine. When I was younger, I used to talk the ocean about everything in my life. I used to tell it stories and problems in my life, and it always seemed to have listened. It comforted me with its gentle waves crashing. I even used to play games with the waves, and it always seemed to be responding. I genuinely believed the ocean was a person, like an imaginary friend. Its always been special to me. I love exploring the rocks and looking at shells as well as swimming. I live in South Africa in Johannesburg, and it's a 6-hour drive to the ocean. Crazy, I know, but we'd always go to the sea every holiday and sometimes more because my family also lives by the coast. We'd always go to the ocean even if it was freezing, and we'd explore the beach. Another reason I'm interested in the ocean is because of how unrevealed it is. We know virtually nothing about it. There's always something new to discover. I get bored incredibly quickly. The ocean is astronomically huge. I don't think I'll ever get bored in this lifetime. It is also entrancing. It's so free and magnificent and creepy (dare I say). It's powerful. It could overcome all of the earth if it wanted to, and that's just what we know. We need to look after this masterpiece. It's too precious to be destroyed, not to mention that it can destroy the entire human race very easily.

I take the ferry regularly to get to Circular Quay and sit outside whenever I can to feel the breeze, smell the water, and watch the boats cut through it. Beach holidays and exploring bays and mangroves is how I grew up and always the ocean has awed me with its figurative and literal depths. We use the ocean for travel, for food, for play. We and everything else came from it yet we know so little about it. It always feels like an honour, to dip my toes in the sea.

Inviting, welcoming, but also capable of great violence, the ocean is as vital as forests to mankind's survival - perhaps more so. It is there to be exploited generously and forgivingly but we ransack it at peril to our species. At the moment, we march towards our extinction. We have been warned!

No one image can convey the multitudinous moods, emotions, scenes, danger and life the ocean creates. It can generate so much awe, wonder but also calm. It is just as important, if not more, than the solid parts of the world - and so different they're hard to compare; arguably it's more varied than the land masses. The ocean isn't an obstacle, challenge, backdrop or border, or even simply a habitat, but an intrinsic part of human life and the cradle and sustainer of the only known universal life. I hope I can learn more about the ocean and take steps to protect it as it deserves.

Humans have a desire, whether conscious or unconscious, to seek out experiences of awe. These awe inspiring experiences increase happiness, reduce stress and can even make us better people. It's unsurprising that these experiences, despite our modern human disconnection, come from the natural world. I am consistently amazed by the waves, the biodiversity, the underwater caves and volcanoes, the weird and wonderful, the undiscovered. I want to know more and be able to tell others about it so that they too can be filled with wonderful sense of awe.

There are of course different species, but there are also, for example, the relationships between different species and the effects each have on the environment around them. There's so much to know about the ocean. However, because of global warming, I think we're running out of time to learn about it all. I sometimes wonder about how many species and habitats have gone extinct before we've even seen them. To me the ocean is a beautiful treasure trove of knowledge.

The ocean to me means a never ending home for so many animals and mammals, small and large. Ive always had a passion for the ocean even though I don’t live in a place known for it. I want to help keep the ocean a safe and healthy place for its life while also studying and finding new life to help protect. I think the ocean can be a scary place but at the same time one of the most beautiful and mysterious things to explore. There are so many things and animals we are yet to learn about and I find that very fascinating and can’t wait to do so.

The ocean is presented as a mystical place filled with horror, alien like creatures that can kill humans without thinking, unspeakable acts of epic violence, yet even in the deepest, most dark areas of the ocean, there is beauty. The ocean represents an unlimited boundary of things we are yet to explore and discover, for most, if not all, it creates an eerie sense of awe. For myself, it seems like an unfathomable, never ending treasure trove, with so much to be discovered and explored, just waiting to be understood. Inside the ocean, I am certain is the pathway to better understanding our planet, and where we came from as a species, and where other lifeforms have evolved from.

The ocean means everything to me. It is Life. Before coming to Australia, I lived on a small island in the Philippines. The ocean was everything, only a 2 metre distance from our home. It was our source of life, food, nutrition and peace. We could bathe in the ocean, to cleanse our pain, or float motionlessly to take away any means of stress. We used the ocean to view sea creatures and coexist with the life in the deep. We studied the waves, helping us to know when to travel by sea or when to know when fresh fish would be coming in. The ocean was everything. It was life.

Our lack of knowledge about so much of the ocean excites me, in that there is so much to be discovered, but also scares me, in that we are only scratching the surface on how we as a species are damaging marine life.

Even though I have thalassophobia, I have always been intrigued by the ocean and its contents. What the ocean means to me is this whole new world that is so very different from our own. Despite it being one world, at certain parts it is this vast monochrome emptiness and at other parts it is full of life and color. The ocean is something to be marveled as it is also important to the life living on land as it was involved in out past, it is in our present, and it will be in our future. The ocean is a world that will always have something new as humans have only managed to discover so little of it, there is so much to explore but such little time to do so in one lifetime. That is the reason I picked this photo, despite it being a mythical creature, it represents the stories that have been told in past generations insinuating that these creatures might have existed or are hidden deep in the ocean further down than any human technology can reach which reinforces the unknowns in the deep blue ocean. The ocean is such a wonder.

It represents a life lived by one's own terms and rules, not having to conform to the norms of today's busy society and ways, it represents difference , wildness, .for me it's like something is missing when I can't hear the waves at night or watch them on a stormy rainy day ...there's a mystery so passionate and nostalgic and epic about the ocean that you feel obligated to find out what it is, as if you'll never be complete if you don't ..its escaping ..escaping from reality ,from pain , for me the ocean represents home it represents adventure like one can never find in cities or towns .once you had a taste of the vast freedom that ocean can offer you , you can never let go of it again

. It's my heart .and more importantly it represents everything I am and wish to be.

There should have been so many more fish on this reef and bigger fish. Then I saw this. It is the first sign of bleaching on an otherwise pristine reef. We really need to find a way to stop this. The cause and effect is circular. If we don't stop it, it will be the end of us too.

When I think about the ocean and see the ocean, I get a sense of feeling at home, all my worries and stresses leave my mind as I hear the waves and the ocean sounds. I have a curiosity to see what lies beneath the waves and parts of the ocean we have not yet explored and the amount of history that lies infront of me everytime I think about it it’s astonishing I’d love to learn more.

I grew up reading books on sharks and watching every documentary I could find on marine life and our oceans. When I think of our oceans, I think of their diverse life, the beauty beneath the waves, an untamed wilderness and I cannot help but be in awe. Of all marine life, sharks have always been my favourite. I have so much respect and love for such a misunderstood animal.

To me, the ocean is a mostly aesthetic experience. I live very far from any ocean (the closest place to where I can see the ocean is over 8 hours away!) so seeing it has always been such a treat for me. My hometown and most areas that I've been to are extremely mountainous which definitely makes me so intrigued by the ocean. I remember seeing the ocean for the first time as a very little girl and being simultaneously terrified and mystified. All bodies of water I'd ever seen up until that point had land on the other side of it, so looking out into the vastness of the ocean with nothing but water stretching as far as I could see...my toddler mind was absolutely blown. To this day I love the ocean, despite only seeing it in person a mere handful of times. That being said, I am quite scared of it and don't think I'd ever want to go out on it on any kind of boat, and swimming it is absolutely out of the question ^^; The second seaweed or anything touches my leg...I am out of that water in a flash. I would love to live somewhere on the beach somewhere! The sunsets over the water, the sea air, the sands...that sounds very nice to me ^-^
I respect the ocean above all else and I think protecting is paramount. The world can do a lot of things on her own, but we, as humans, need to take back and any all damage we've done to our waters and reduce harm from here on out. We need to do better.

Ocean is...life. It seems just a simple and predictable concept...but that is the true! It is life because life is in the ocean, from the very surface to the deepest bottom, in the infinitive varieties of flora and fauna living there. It is life because water is our system of support as well as our source of income. It is life because its biodiversity influences our behaviors and determines our healthcare and welfare.Yes, surely, definitely...for me the Ocean is life..and I can't love my own life if I do not love the Ocean, I can't have respect for myself and the others if I do not respect and help the Ocean.

There is something so freeing about being able to swim as far as you can, and see the ocean stretch to the horizon. Everything that inhabited the sea fascinated me as a child, from the tiny shrimp in rock pools, to the seals we could spot from the coast path.
