Mentos and coke is a physical change. In carbonated beverages, CO2 gas is dissolved in the solution. Gases dissolve in liquid just like solids dissolve in liquids. Carbonated beverages go "flat" when the CO2 comes out of the solution and escapes as a gas in the atmosphere. This is why carbonated beverages must remain sealed so they don't go "flat" before they reach the consumer. The release of CO2 is generally pretty slow from an opened bottle. But this is where the mentos come in. Mentos provides nucleation points that facilitate CO2 coming out of the solution phase into the gas phase very quickly. The mentos will rush to the top because it is being pushed out by the increased gas pressure from the CO2 coming out of the solution into the gas phase. In conclusion, the mentos create the gas CO2 to quicken the rapid deflate of the gas within the carbonated bottle.

Once you place a Mentos candy in diet coke there is an eruption of soda quickly after! The reaction taking place is gas escaping from the soda because of the Mentos! As everyone in class knows about solids, liquids, and gases. Mentos are a solid and diet Coke is a liquid. When these two mix, a gas forms. All three phases of matter are shown in this activity.
