It was interesting to see how a key aspect of Polynesian culture was able to develop into a global hit. While reading it made me realize the lack of attention that lots of idigenous people get to the innovations that they discovered. Westerners have been influenced by Polynesian culture through many different aspects like art, music and dance traditions.
Tattooing has always been important in Polynesian culture and many of the designs have become popular among Western tattoo artists. The fashion industry has also incorporated lots of Polynesian patterns into their clothing designs. A significant example of Polynesian music gaining attention in the Western music industry is Israel Kamakawiwo'ole,  a Hawaiian musician who's version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" became a global hit.

A widely known company Dole, known for their pineapple company has had a long history of exploitation of Polynesian people. While it may appear that tourism helps the economy of these indigenous people it does the opposite and it also has a lot of detrimental effects on the environment, This has a large effect on Polynesian culture because of the close ties that they have to these lands and its beautiful landscapes. Gaugin wanted to capture an untouched culture in his artwork, He was also captivated by the Polynesian culture, While we may enjoy looking at his artwork it's also important to note the background of his paintings. In his paintings of women most appear distant with their face concealing a story we never get to hear.
