Brian, a recent high school graduate, has come to your program with the hope of working as an office assistant. 

During intake, he reports the following things:
  •  He dislikes math, frequently used a calculator during classwork and exams, and received extended time on both as well.  
  • Brian mentions that he didn’t really feel successful in school because he struggled to understand his homework. He did well in class because he followed along with what the teachers told him to do, but when he left school and tried things on his own, he said that “it was like everything from the day erased from his mind”. 
  • Brian said he felt lost and overwhelmed so he just put everything away and either googled the answers, turned in a 0, or went to see the teacher during lunch if he had time. 
  • Brian mentioned that he often felt depressed when he was struggling to understand/remember what his teachers had taught him and he would sometimes just want to avoid doing anything when he felt this way. 
  • He said because he was organized and kept track of everything in his binders, his teachers saw how hard he tried and helped him through it. 
  • He mentioned that he never told his teachers when he was feeling overwhelmed, he just asked for help with homework when he didn't understand it. 

Brian uses a wheelchair and Brian has mentioned in the referral form that he has paraplegia but does not mention anything further in your initial meeting. 

He wants to work because he is not sure that more school is the right choice for him. Brian wants to learn work skills but doesn’t have any experience yet and isn’t sure about what field he is interested in. He’s heard office jobs are good and stable and thinks he would be good at that type of job because he has good organization skills.
