Week 9: Social Justice & Social Innovation

Pre class Pre-work: Reading & Annotations

1. Reading Reflection

After reading Ezio Manzini's chapter on "Social Innovation Design", I realized that there is a very close connection between design and social innovation in today's world.

Design now plays a crucial role in supporting social change, promoting cooperation and encouraging sustainable lifestyles, rather than merely focusing on creating new objects.

Mancini emphasizes that true social innovation often emerges from within communities. Initiatives such as the Circle project in the UK or cooperative housing efforts demonstrate how design can enable people to work together and improve their daily lives.

For me, the idea that design can serve as a tool for building social resilience is very inspiring. It has given me a different perspective on the role of creativity and community action in addressing social challenges and made me more daring to innovate.

2.Key Concepts

1. Social Innovation:

Finding creative ways to meet social needs by encouraging cooperation and strengthening community connections.

2. Social Innovation Design:

Applying design skills not only to create products but also to support meaningful social change and promote sustainable development.

3. Community Engagement:

Actively involving local people in decision-making to ensure that solutions better meet actual needs, are more inclusive and sustainable.

4. Sustainability:

Ensuring that any solution takes into account environmental, economic and social impacts to create long-term positive outcomes.

5. Collaborative Design:

Bringing together people with different experiences and skills to jointly design more effective and widely accepted solutions.

Life Journey of Telephone Components

These phone parts—like the keypad, circuit boards, handset, wires, and casing—each follow a unique life cycle:

	1.	Where they come from:

	•	Plastics (keypad, casing, handset): made from petroleum.

	•	Metals (screws, connectors, wires): mined from copper, aluminum, and iron ores.

	•	Electronics (PCBs, chips): made from silicon, gold, and other materials in cleanrooms.

	•	Wires and coils: copper coated with plastic or rubber.

	2.	Their journey:

	•	Materials are processed and turned into parts in factories (mainly in Asia).

	•	Parts are assembled into phones, shipped globally, and used in homes or offices.

	•	The phone functions for several years before being replaced.

	3.	What happens after use:

	•	Some parts are recycled (e.g., metals from PCBs).

	•	Plastics may be reused or burned/landfilled.

	•	Some phones are refurbished for reuse.

These everyday objects trace a long industrial journey—from raw earth to your hand, and eventually back into the waste or recycling stream.

Activity (Individual + Group): The thing from the future

1.Game Rules Overview

Our group participated in an interior design game called "Things of the Future". Each member took turns drawing four types of cards to jointly construct a design item from the future.

The four types of cards are:

"Memory Bottle Post Office" Memory Drop Box

• Year: 2080

• Location: Senior Community

• Purpose: Elderly with Dementia

• Emotion: Nostalgia and Forgetting

Note:

Elderly people can record their unspoken thoughts or memories in a "memory bottle" in the form of sound, and then send it to their families through a "memory post office". This bottle has functions such as image projection, smell reproduction, and touch screens with hugs, which can recreate the emotional atmosphere at that time. This not only helps to heal the elderly but also enables future generations to understand their past.

2.Our card-drawing results（as shown in the figure）

•	Time: 2080

•	Place: Elderly community

•	Participants: Seniors with dementia

•	Emotional theme: Nostalgia and forgetting

3.The innovative achievements of this team: "Memory Bottle Post Office - Memory Transmission"

Creative description:

In the elderly community of 2080, the "Memory Bottle Post Office" has become an emotional tool, helping patients with dementia communicate with their families. Elderly people can input their thoughts and memories that they cannot express into the "Memory Bottle". This system utilizes technologies such as speech recognition, image reconstruction, and emotional reproduction, and reproduces these emotions in forms such as holographic projection, familiar sounds, smells, hugs, and touchscreen interactions.

The "Memory Bottle" will be delivered to family members to help descendants understand the life memories of the elderly and bring them spiritual comfort.

Function description:

• Voice emotion recognition

• Memory reconstruction system (including projection, smell, possibly also including touchscreen hugs)

• Family distribution process (for distribution)

• The bottle body will light up to show the number of memories recalled

I was responsible for proposing the theme concept of "senior citizens with dementia + nostalgia", and assisted in completing the sketches and content writing. Although I missed the classroom games, I managed to understand and submit the design task through reviewing the card-drawing steps and the creative process.

！ Due to personal reasons, I was unable to participate in the group activities in the classroom on time.

This idea was independently completed based on the game rules of the course, simulating the complete card-drawing process and the group's creative output. I aimed to reflect my understanding and participation in the design task of "Things from the Future" for this week.

If there is an opportunity, I am willing to communicate with the group members after class or merge the creative content. Thank you for your understanding!

From the Future: EmotePot - The Emotional Guardian Vase

By the year 2075, every young person in every city will have an "emotional vase". It can determine your emotional state based on your tone of voice, facial expressions and body temperature. When you feel anxious or sad, it will light up in soft colors and play your favorite music. It not only brings you comfort but also alerts your closest friends to show concern for you.

EmotePot is a tool for future humans to coexist harmoniously with emotions, and it is also a symbol of emotional technology.
