The Japanese government believed that the only way to solve its economic and demographic problems was to expand into China and take over its import market. But the U.S did not quite agree with this. So what the Japanese did to satisfy the U.S. was declaring war on China. But either way, Japan and the U.S. were bound to go to war with each other.

The distance between Japan and Hawaii is greater than the mainlands of the U.S. Therefore, this meant that the U.S. did not expect for Japan to attack the distant islands. Officials were confident that the Japanese would attack near one of the European colonies therefore making the attack very unexpected.

The most important consequence of Pearl Harbor was the American declaration of war on Japan. Three days after, Germany and Italy declared war against the United States. However, one of the most devastating effects was the dropping of two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 100,000 people were killed immediately and others were killed within the following months due to the bomb residue.
