Keep audience in mind.
We remember images 65%, what we hear- 10%.
Effective design appeals to more than 2 senses (Travel ads will allow you to imagine seeing it, feeling it, drinking, etc.) 
The image is the slide- make the background NOT matter.  Search for Google images "larger than 800x600 pixels" for "full-bleed" images.
Take photos with a lot of usable (negative) space for potential text.
Curate for yourself a folder of images to use. 
Follow the "Rule of Thirds" designing slides.
